1898 - Pierre and Marie Curie announced the existence of a new element, later to be named radium. Radium (Latin radius, ray) was discovered by Marie Curie and her husband Pierre in 1898 in pitchblende/uraninite from North Bohemia. While studying pitchblende the Curies removed uranium from it and found that the remaining material was still radioactive. They then separated out a radioactive mixture mostly consisting of barium which gave a brilliant red flame color and spectral lines which had never been documented before. In 1902 radium was isolated into its pure metal by Curie and Andre Debierne through the electrolysis of a pure radium chloride solution by using a mercury cathode and distilling in an atmosphere of hydrogen gas. I was seventeen and working for Deutsch and Shea Advertising Agency in New York. It was April 5, 1963. The news of my father's death in Gary, Indiana the day before wasn't too painful, for I had hardly known the man. It had been years since I'd seen him; sometimes I would almost forget that I had a father. I knew he had been a good merchant - always making a living, but never more. I believed that by profession he had been a pawnbroker, junk man, TV and radio repairman, appraiser, seller of used clothes and appliances, and trader - all of which he practiced under the name of "Irving's Trading Post." There are three ways prices get into guide books: Prices are taken from auction results. Guide prices are observed at shows, stores, and within advertisements. Prices are gathered by surveying dealers. Most antiques price guides are compiled using a combination of the three methods listed above. Using a combination and averaging the results is the only way to get reliable information. http://vialin.com Daily Press. Sep 23 2004 02:14 GMT

Initially the movement can be described as a rejection of tradition, and facing problems from a fresh perspective based on current ideas and techniques. Thus Gustav Mahler considered himself a "modern" composer and Gustave Flaubert's made his famous remark that, "It is essential to be thoroughly modern in ones tastes." The rejection of tradition by the Impressionist movement, makes it one of the first artistic movements to be seen, in retrospect, as a modern movement. vialin.com Jul 9 2004 7:15 GMT
