The government of Canada has initiated a 60 day public comment period for Bisphenol A. Bisphenol A is an organic compound used in the production of plastic materials. Controversy has surrounded its use in food products and child toys because it mimics estrogen and can lead to abnormal hormonal responses. Today the Minister of Health Tony Clement and the Minister of the Environment John Baird reported that the government would take action after a complete risk assessment of Bisphenol A. Clement commented, "Canada has been the first country in the world to conduct risk assessments on a number of chemicals of concern, as a result of a new initiative announced by the Prime Minister on December 8, 2006 known as the Chemicals Management Plan." The reaction came after consulting with industry and other stakeholders. The 60 day comment period is set to begin on April 19, 2008. The result could be a complete ban on the importation, sale and advertising of all polycarbonate bottles containing the substance.

Hypnox is a 25-minute hypnotherapeutic audio CD developed as an alternative to Botox. Where as Botox paralyzes the facial muscles, making it nearly impossible to frown, Hypnox targets and re-trains those same muscles. The Hypnox recording uses hypnosis to stop the frowning habit, allowing wrinkles to ease away - permanently in many cases. Hypnotherapy is ideally designed to fight habits - it has been used successfully by millions of people as an aid to quit smoking, or to curb over-eating. If you think of persistent frowning as a habit, Hypnox then makes perfect sense. Early feedback from users of Hypnox describes a noticeable reduction in lines and wrinkles around the eyes and between the brows, as well as a smoothing of the lines around the mouth. The product for some users may take a little longer to take effect than Botox (depending on the susceptibility to hypnosis of the user) but the final effects are the same - relaxed facial muscles which allow the overlying skin to smooth out, and the mechanical wrinkles to fade away.

A survey of 1,008 Canadians ages 35-75 with annual household incomes of $50,000 or more, as conducted in May 2007 by Manulife Financial has shown that women are far more worried about their future long term care needs as compared to men. The survey has shown that despite their own concerns, women like men often fail to factor long term care costs into their retirement planning and this can catch them financially unprepared. In Canada, most women outlive their male partners, who on average are at least four years older than the female. As a result financially, most women will come to depend on using some or all of their retirement savings in order to support their partner's long term care needs. But by being proactive, women who smartly plan for their own health care needs can avoid falling short when they are alone and in need of care themselves.
According to Ontario's Anesthesiologists smokers should cease their habit even for a short time to help curb the risk of complications both during and after any surgical procedure. To this end, Anesthesiologists have released a new campaign to get smokers to butt out before surgery. The campaign is called - Stop Smoking for Safer Surgery, and it is meant to be a public-patient awareness campaign. Complications during and after surgery costs the Canadian health care system untold millions of dollars each year. Getting smokers to cease their habit, even for a limited time frame before and after surgery can save the health care system millions in needed money. It has long been known that cigarette smoke contains very harmful elements such as nicotine and carbon monoxide amongst others. For those undertaking medical procedures, nicotine affects the heart by making it work harder than it should, thus consuming more oxygen, but the carbon monoxide prevents the blood from carrying the necessary oxygen to the heart. This combo leads to an increased risk of heart attack and/or other complications while under the influence of an anesthetic.

Health Canada has approved ERAXIS - anidulafungin. ERAXIS can be used by hospitals for the treatment of invasive candidiasis/candidemia in adult non-neutropenic patients. With crude mortality rates approaching 46 percent, invasive candidiasis has become one of the leading causes of death in Canada from hospital-acquired infections. The New England Journal of Medicine has published the results of study on the effectiveness of ERAXIS and its use as an antifungal treatment. Patients who are critically ill, cancer patients and organ transplant recipients are traditionally the most at risk of falling prey to invasive candida infections.
Doctors often say, that if you know your individual cold sore symptoms and you act on them in time, you can reduce or almost eliminate cold sores appearances. But first let us understand what cold sores are. Also known as fever blisters, cold sores are a cluttering of small blisters usually inside the mouth. They form mostly on the inner side of the lips. Sometimes they are even formed on the outer edge of the mouth. These blisters cause an inflammation on the skin around them. The skin becomes red and sensitive. These blisters may burst open. In such cases a clear liquid puss oozes out of them. It takes approximately eight to nine days for the blisters to completely heal. After breaking open then usually hurt for a few days before getting healed completely. These blisters or cold sores are mainly because of the herpes simplex virus (HSV). There are two types of herpes viruses HSV-1 and HSV-2. Herpes simplex is primarily the reason for blisters. The virus is active on the skin. Another region of its action is the delicate and thin tissues mucous membranes. These tissues are responsible for the wetting, lubrication and protection of certain parts. Both the types of herpes virus HSV-1 and HSV-2 can cause blisters inside the mouth. It can even cause blister on the genitals. The viruses are transferred by direct contact such as contact with the sore or through sexual contact.
Autism is a major developmental malfunction that is causing increasing concerns lately. It is a sad disorder because it affects infants below three years of age. Usually it begins after birth but before the child ages three years. It can be defined as a brain development disorder. Autism primarily injures social interaction and also communication. Symptoms are usually bounded behavior and repeated actions. All these symptoms are displayed at an early age. All are observed before the child reaches three years old. Most children affected by autism are very normal in appearance. However, unlike normal kids these affected children are involved in very puzzling and disturbed behavior al the time. This is the major symptom used to detect autism. Autism was considered a very rare case for many years. Studies showed that the affected ratio was just five children in every 10,000 new births. But, alarmingly the number of autism affected children has gone up tremendously. Studies showed that it had almost multiplied by 12 times, as every 60 children in 10,000 were reported to be suffering fro autism. Most recent studies show that one to two cases reported per 1000. The ratio is thrice higher for children affected from ASD standing at about 4.3:1 for male is to female ratio. Thus males outnumber females four is to one. This gender biasing is nothing different as males are much more prone to developmental diseases than females.
Compared to those with no health problems, those with disabilities, or chronic diseases have a much lower rate of Internet use. Barely half of those with health problems access the Internet, whereas those without are about 25% more likely to access the Internet. When it comes to looking for information about health related issues though, those with health problems are more likely to use the Internet to learn more about different health topics. This use of the Internet leads to a difference in the treatment decisions and course, interactions with their health care providers, and it also affects any diet or fitness program. These findings come from Pew Internet & American Life Projectâs E-patients With a Disability or Chronic Disease. The report was conducted in August 2007.
Health Canada has approved Actonel for the treatment of post-menopausal osteoporosis in Canada. Actonel or risedronate sodium tablets, will come in 75 mg tablets. The advantage to Actonel is that it only requires taking one 75 mg tablet on two consecutive days each month. What Actonel does is it helps with vertebral and nonvertebral fracture protection. Postmenopausal osteoporosis suffers like the idea of taking less medication. "I don't like to take medication more often than I have to, so to only have to take one pill two consecutive days a month, while still protecting myself from fractures is very appealing," says Anne Wolf herself an osteoporosis patient. Physicians will still be able to prescribe to their patients the best dosing options available. Actonel will be available to doctors and patients in 5 mg daily, 35 mg Once-A-Week, and the new 75 mg monthly two day dosing regimen.
The Coalition against Morbid Obesity is openly supporting the findings of a new major study on morbid obesity and bariatric surgery. The study was published this week in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine. The study finds that bariatric surgery has shown to significantly reduce the overall mortality rate of these afflicted with morbid obesity. Jennifer Schultz, a cofounder of the Coalition against Morbid Obesity says, "Morbid obesity is a disease. Bariatric surgery is the only efficient treatment of morbid obesity. It is a matter of life and death." Diseases such as Type 2 diabetes, heart disease and arterial hypertension are a direct result of morbid obesity for many people. The body mass index or BMI, can help identify those at risk. Those with a BMI higher or equal to 40 qualify as morbidly obese.
The Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario is raising the alarm bells after a speech by Dr. Brian Day, the new president of the Canadian Medical Association. In his speech to a gathering of members from the Canadian Medical Association on Wednesday, Dr. Day was heard advocating private insurance schemes, a new market model for funding hospitals, and even going as far as undermining the Canada Health Act. Mary Ferguson-Paré, the president of the Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario says of Dr. Day's ideas, "Dr. Day's vision is a health-care system that favours for-profit interests and two-tier health care and it will lead to the destruction of Medicare." The most controversial of Dr. Day's recommendations is the creation of a tiered health care system via the introduction of private insurance. A system where those that can pay get preferential treatment seems to be in the offering. Or as Doris Grinspun the executive directory of the RNOA puts it, "The minute you introduce private insurance into our system, you create two lines of patients. And the results are obvious. Those in the first line pay for their care using their Visa card while the majority who can not afford it wait in the second line. This is two-tier pure and simple." Pointing out the hypocritical position of Dr. Day in his feigned protection of Canada's health care system Ferguson-Paré said, "Dr. Day, who owns a private hospital, likes to insist that he believes in universal health care, but he has no credibility given his insistence on two-tier solutions."
After a BBC documentary confirmed that Boots No7 Restore & Renew could do as it claimed, the anti-aging serum is coming to Canada with much fanfare. The effects of the documentary resulted in line-ups at stores in the UK and the United States for the product. Boots No7 Restore & Renew will be made available to Canadians through an exclusive deal with Shoppers Drug Mart. Shoppers Drug Mart is one of Canada's largest retail drug stores operating in Canada. The BBC documentary undertook tests to try to confirm the science behind chosen cosmetics in relation to their claims that they could repair and even prevent the signs of aging as a result of lines, wrinkles and pigmentation changes. Boots No7 Protect & Perfect as it is known in the UK was shown to begin the repair process for damaged skin. "Immediately following the program, sales soared with one product sold every 1.3 seconds in that market," said Shoppers Drug Mart Vice President Morne Van Wyk.
Having just moved into a new 32,000 square feet facility at the end of July, Next Safety, Inc is announcing a proprietary pulmonary device, which they say, has a higher efficacy than cigarettes. But unlike the carcinogen packing tobacco products currently on the market, it does not contain any carcinogens. This new nicotine delivery device will be made available for sampling on August 14th. Select reporters in a number of U.S. cities will be given the product. As well, the company will be holding a discussion group at the Mandarin Oriental in New York on Tuesday, August 21st. Among those attending will be reporters, public officials, pulmonologists and oncologists. Estimates show that today there are more than 600 million people addicted to smoking globally. Tobacco use is currently the second leading cause of death around the world - to both the smoker and those affected by second-hand smoke.
An unsuspected gene has been found to be associated with ulcerative colitis. This according to researchers from the University of Pittsburgh, the Hospital for Sick Children, and Mount Sinai Hospital. IBD or Inflammatory Bowel Disease includes both Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, is a chronic debilitating disease that affects the intestinal tract. According to the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of Canada, nearly 170,000 Canadian men, women and children have Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Dr. Daniela Rotin who is a senior scientist in Cell Biology at the SickKids Research Institute, and a professor of biochemistry at the University of Toronto says, "We found a previously unsuspected gene called that expresses an enzyme called PTPsigma. This type of protein is important for the regulation of cell growth, mammalian development and cancer."
The Canadian Association of Pompe is applauding a recent decision by the Common Drug Review Board for their recommendation for the use of Myozyme for those infants under one year of age who show the symptoms of Pompe disease. Pompe disease can be an early death sentence for infants if left untreated. The use of Myozyme has been found to be very effective in the treatment of the infantile onset form of Pompe disease. In Canada, Myozyme is the first and only treatment available for Pompe disease. Pompe disease is a rare neuromuscular disorder that progressively deteriorates the muscles including the heart, skeletal muscles, liver and nervous system.
According to a new poll, nine out of ten Canadians agree that the hiring of more trained nurses would go a long way in reducing overall waiting times. The poll was conducted for the Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions. The recent poll also found that eighty-four per cent of those surveyed trust information that comes from organizations representing nurses, more than the 77% who trust information from organizations representing doctors. This was in contrast to the sixty-four per cent of Canadians who trust healthcare information coming from chief executives of hospitals and other health authorities. Editorial writers and associated commentators rank lowest on trust of information at barely over fifty per cent. The provincial minister of health fares little better in being trusted to deliver health care information at only six in ten believing they are reliable sources of information.
Frank Zechner who is the Executive Director of the Ontario Sewer and Watermain Construction Association says that the Ontario government's Action Plan to address high levels of lead in drinking water is nothing more than a band-aid solution that does not address the real root problems in the system. "The Province has failed to address this most critical element, the replacement of lead service lines. Replacing those lines was recommended in the Walkerton report five years ago, but the Province clearly prefers that homeowners flush more frequently and purchase water filters instead," said Frank Zechner. The province of Ontario had ordered a series of tests in 36 municipalities last month, but the water was not tested under real life conditions in most homes. The testing was done after the water ran for at least five minutes and after 'standing' in the pipe for only 30 minutes. The problem with that is most homeowners do not run their taps that frequently or for that long of a duration. Yet surprisingly, even under these unrealistic test conditions, the total lead concentration in some cities such as Hamilton, St. Catharines, and Guelph increased by anywhere from 20 to 5000%. If the water was allowed to stand in those pipes for several hours instead of 30 minutes, the total number of failures produced would have been much higher.
Boston Pizza is now the second national restaurant chain in Canada to join the Health Check program. As of May 28th Boston Pizza's menu will be trans fat free. Boston Pizza's new menu will feature the Health Check symbol, which indicates that each item on the menu has met specific nutrient criteria based on Canada's Food Guide. Mark Pacinda, president of Boston Pizza International Inc had this to say, "As part of our commitment to providing guests with healthy, delicious menu options, we took a leadership approach with our suppliers and worked with them to completely eliminate all industrially-added trans fats from their ingredients. We take pride in using only the freshest ingredients to ensure maximum flavour in all of our recipes."
Trevor Linden of the Vancouver Canucks is the new face for a cancer prevention and awareness campaign. The Campaign is being conducted by the Canadian Cancer Society, B.C. and Yukon Division. Trevor Linden became involved with the Canadian Cancer Society back in 2002 following his first visit to Camp Goodtimes, which is a donor-funded program that supports children and families affected by cancer. The campaign highlights that up to 50 per cent of all cancers are due to preventable factors. The Society is very confident that Trevor Linden can help encourage others to make necessary lifestyle changes, that can help reduce their overall risk of cancer. Charlene Krepiakevich the vice president of marketing and communications for the Canadian Cancer Society, B.C. and Yukon Division says, "Trevor is a role model for British Columbians, young and old alike. He's a hometown hero celebrated in this year's playoff run for making winning plays when they counted the most. We're delighted by his interest in working with us to influence the health of all British Columbians." Experts in the field of cancer research are predicting that the number of new cancer cases in Canada will increase by 60 per cent over the next two decades due to our aging and growing population.
Quebec and Ontario lead Canada in having the highest per capita spending levels on prescription drugs while also having the lowest levels of generic drug use in Canada. These findings come from the Canadian Institute for Health Information. The CIHI report released today shows that spending on prescribed drugs was highest in Quebec, at an estimated $699 per person, followed by Ontario at $675 per person. "It is not a coincidence that the two provinces with the highest per capita drug expenditure are the ones with the lowest rates of lower-cost generic drug use," said Jim Keon, President of the Canadian Generic Pharmaceutical Association. British Columbia sports one of the country's lowest per capita spending levels on prescribed drugs at $567 per person, while lower-cost generic equivalents are dispensed to fill 52 per cent of all prescriptions. By contrast, generic drugs are dispensed to fill only 40 per cent of prescriptions in Quebec and 47 per cent in Ontario.
