Motorcycle and Scooter Ride to Work Day is Wednesday, July 18, 2007

This year's sixteenth annual motorcycle and scooter commuting demonstration will increase the number of riders on the road, according to Ride to Work, a non-profit advocacy organization. "Riding to work on this day shows the positive value of motorcycles and scooters for transportation. For many people, riding is an economical, efficient and socially responsible form of mobility that saves energy, helps the environment and provides a broad range of other public benefits," states Andy Goldfine, the event organizer. Motorcycle and scooter enthusiasts and rider organizations worldwide encourage their members to ride to work on this day.

Hogs for Dogs - Saturday June 2, 2007

Fundraiser for the Portsmouth Humane Society
The Portsmouth Humane Society and Bayside Harley-Davidson are excited to present the first… of what we hope will be an annual event, “HOGS for DOGS” a fundraiser for the Portsmouth animal shelter.
The Portsmouth Humane Society is a non-profit shelter surviving on public donations with only a small stipend from The City of Portsmouth. Last year alone they received nearly 3000 stray, unwanted, injured and abandoned animals; they are loved, rehabilitated, nurtured and given a second chance at finding loving homes.

VA Tech Lost Tour of Virginia

The Virginia Tech Community Design Assistance Center is hosting the first annual Lost Tour of Virginia—a motorcycle tour through picturesque communities and winding roads that time forgot—on Sat., July 28, from 9 am-8 pm. Proceeds from the event will help fund the publication of a book about the history of these Virginia communities.

Bikers will register from 9-10 am at the Blacksburg Community Center at 725 Patrick Henry Drive in Blacksburg. From 10-11 am, participants can enjoy a breakfast during a welcome by Bob Crouch, Virginia Governor’s Motorcycle Advisory Council Chair; a presentation of highlights along the route by Terri Fisher, co-author of Lost Communities of Virginia and CDAC Outreach Coordinator; and event safety tips by Keith Lindgren, Motorcycle Safety League of Virginia, Inc., President. Riders will depart at staggered intervals between 11 am and noon. Between 2:30 and 6 pm, riders will return from riding for provided snacks, to roam vendor booths, bid in a silent auction, and judge motorcycles. From 6-8 pm, dinner is served along with a presentation by Dale Coyner, motorcycle enthusiast and author of many books, including Motorcycle Journeys through the Appalachians. The evening concludes with door prizes, raffles, auction results, and ride prizes.

MRF LEADERS REPORT - MAC Reconvenes

MOTORCYCLE ADVISORY COMMITTEE RECONVENES
The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) is pleased to announce that the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) Motorcycle Advisory Committee (MAC) held its second meeting in Washington DC recently. As outlined in the legislation that the MRF was instrumental in developing and passing through Congress, the MAC's purpose is to provide advice to the Secretary of Transportation, through the FHWA, on all infrastructure issues and how they affect motorcycles. The Council is comprised of 10 individuals representing all different facets of the motorcycling community including the MRF, the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA), The National Association of State Motorcycle Safety Administrators (SMSA), State Department of Transportation (DOT) officials and "road furniture" safety engineers. "Road furniture" refers to anything on the road other than the actual road – so signage, guard rails, bridges, light posts, striping, lane markers, etc. would be considered "road furniture." The best part is that ALL of the MAC members must be riders. MAC covered a lot of ground over the two-day meeting, and all of the meeting minutes, recommendations and action items will be available soon on the MAC website at http://safety.fhwa.dot.gov/mac/index.htm

Federal Legislation to End Discrimination of Bikers Introduced

The Motorcycle Riders Foundation reports that legislation to close the loophole that currently exists in our nation?s health insurance industry has been introduced in the US Senate (S 616) and House (HR 1076).

Under current law, group market insurance customers - that?s everyone who has insurance from a job in the private sector, military or government - can be denied benefits for a particular injury just because it came from an motorcycle accident.
