  • Has Abercrombie Lost Its Shirt?
"Skimpy" has always been Abercrombie & Fitch's (NYSE: ANF) theme. Apparently, it's not limited to the company's apparel and models. Stripping down to just $896.3 million in sales, or 8% lower than last year's showing, Abercrombie's third-quarter top line felt the brunt of the consumer slowdown. Overall comps dropped 14%, and extra markdowns shed 20 basis points from the gross margin

  • Heard on the Runway - WSJ.com : Lunchtime Snap: The Continuing Decline of Makeup Sales
Makeup sales are sagging, along with the economy. U.S. sales of makeup decreased 3% to reach $2.6 billion from January through Oct. 31 2008, compared with the same time period a year earlier, according to the latest numbers released today by market-research firm NPD Group. The numbers reflected a worsening of the sales decline that the industry had seen earlier in the year — U.S. makeup sales were down 2% from January through Sept. 30, NPD says.
  • Harem pants: Better left on the runway
Whatever happened to normal pants? Droopy, drop-crotch pants have been on the fashion radar since last year (thanks, Hedi, Balmain and Balenciaga). Variously called Thai fisherman's trousers, dhoti, sarouel or kurta pants depending on the culture and the silhouette, these baggy wonders, which I first thought were a fad (like ultra-skinny jeans and high-waisted flares), are, according to magazine fashion reports, a lasting look.

The suit claims that Dillard's, Lord & Taylor, Macy's, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue and designer Andrew Marc misrepresent fur products by labelling and marketing them as "faux fur," when they are not; or by advertising and labelling products as common raccoon, fox or rabbit fur, when they are really made from raccoon

  • Avant-Garde Fashion Might Be on Hiatus, But That Doesn’t Mean Consumers Don't Want It -- The Cut: New York Magazine's Fashion Blog
Has the economy killed avant-garde fashion? According to a lengthy article in WWD, avant-garde designs, save those by a select few like Gareth Pugh and Bernard Willhelm, have fallen by the wayside. Fashion designers want to sell clothes consumers want to buy, and avant-garde does not fall under that umbrella anymore. Director of the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology Valerie Steele says, “Most people want very familiar, nonthreatening-looking clothes.”

  • Deeper Meaning Below A Glossy Surface - washingtonpost.com
The fashion industry has always struggled to burnish its image as something more than a vessel for insecurities, pretentiousness and superficiality. At times this struggle must seem particularly Sisyphean for editors of fashion magazines -- with their wrinkle creams, in-and-out lists and miracle diets -- who are trying to make a case for their social awareness and desire to do more good than harm.

  • American Apparel CEO Charney Profile
The government is after him because he crusades for illegal-immigrant workers. The lawyers are after him because of the three (so far) sexual-harassment lawsuits. This might be enough to bring down the C.E.O of most publicly traded companies but for American Apparel founder Dov Charney it's just another day at the office.
