Esplatter offers news and reviews about horror movies
Word is out that the helmers of "Inside" are off the "Halloween II" sequel to Rob Zombie's "Halloween". So then who would direct? Why not Rob Zombie himself? Now it looks like Rob Zombie is directing "Halloween 2." STYD first reported the rumor and reps from Rob Zombie are not denying it. Apparently, a press release is due in a day or two. Given just how terrible Zombie's "Halloween" remake was, this shouldn't come as good news. But it is somewhat predictable, because his film was a huge commercial success. It also means his much anticipated "Tyrannosaurus Rex" is going to be put on hold. On the bright side, it means that we are getting another horror movie in cineplexes.
Beginning in 1971, "Creature Features" was the single best show for fans of horror in the San Francisco Bay Area. "Watch Horror Films - Keep America Strong" is a documentary about the series. The documentary is set to screen at the Balboa Theater, in San Francisco, December 10, 2008. The film is ultimate tribute to the Bay Area late-night horror television phenomenon of Creature Features (1971-1984 on Oakland's KTVU Ch-2), hosted by Bob Wilkins and later by John Stanley. Also rounding out the bill is the John Stanley cult film NIGHTMARE IN BLOOD. Proceeds benefit the Bob Wilkins Alzheimer's fund. John Stanley will be on hand speaking about his tenure as Creature Features host, signing books and posters.
If you ever wonder what happened to Alice Cooper, look no further than Capri Films’ rock’n’roll vampire comedy "Suck", which has started principal photography. The film stars Rob Stefaniuk, Jessica Paré, Malcolm McDowell, Dave Foley, with Rockers Alice Cooper, Iggy Pop, Moby, Henry Rollins, Alex Lifeson, Dimitri Coates and Carol Pope. Calico Cooper joins her father in the cast. Additional cast members include Paul Anthony, Mike Lobel, Chris Ratz, Barbara Mamabolo and Nicole DeBoer. Written and directed by Rob Stefaniuk, "Suck" is a rock’n’roll vampire comedy about a group of musical wannabees in search of immortality and a record deal. The rock band The Winners have sunk so low, they will do anything to make it big.
Didn't catch this one in theaters, but will certainly catch the DVD, which hits stores on 1/20/09. Here's an early sneak peek at the cover art for "Unrated Director's Cut," "Unrated Collector's Edition" and the Blu-Ray. . . . .
Cover art has been revealed for the February 10 release of Bruce Campbell's comedy "My Name Is Bruce". Bruce Campbell directed and starred in the horror comedy about himself. . . . . .
Here's a pretty absurd sci-fi movie for ya! Director Richard Clabaugh's "Eyeborgs," starring Danny Trejo. An agent for the Dept. of Homeland Security uncovers a plot to assassinate the President using government surveillance robots known as Eyeborgs. A science fiction-action thriller in the tradition of the "Terminator" films. Also stars Luke Eberl and Megan Blake. . .
A script by Joss Whedon has apparently already been completed for a "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" movie, presumably to star Sarah Michelle Gellar. The film likely never would have been made -- but with "Twilight" raking in kazillions at the box office, studio chiefs are likely to greenlight it. Reports the Herald-Sun Newspaper in Australia: The monster success of girly vampire pic Twilight at the US Box office last weekend could kick open the door for a big-screen return of Joss Whedon’s much-loved Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Rumours are circulating in Hollywood that Whedon has a feature-film script based on his hit TV series ready to roll as soon as a studio is prepared to commit. The Buffy concept was first unveiled as a movie in 1992 with long-forgotten Kristy Swanson in the title role. Before it became a hit TV series, "Buffy" was the subject of a theatrical movie in 1992. The show easily outshone the movie..
Anchor Bay, which has been putting out some of the very best horror Blu-Ray releases, is slating "Hellraiser" for release in the format April 28. Anchor Bay's releases of "Dawn of the Dead" and "Halloween" both look absolutely stellar.
I wasn't a fan of the British horror-comedy "Black Death." But now the director, Christopher Smith, is set to replace Geoff Sax as helmer of "Black Death," one of the more interesting medieval fear films being produced. Set to star Sean Bean and Lena Headley, the film is set in Medieval England during the Black Death.
Legendary Spanish horror filmmaker Jess Franco is set to receive a Lifetime Achievement Goya Award next year.
Looking for an aweseome Blu-Ray horror movie present for a loved one, along with the $168 Wal-Mart Blu-Ray player you're buying? Don't want to get burned with a release that has shoddy picture quality? Here's a quick and handy guide to some of the most important Blu-Ray horror releases out there. One issue with Blu-Ray and horror is that so many horror titles are from old, grainy prints.
Anchor Bay Entertainment has announced that "The Alphabet Killer" will have an exclusive New York theatrical engagement starting Friday, December 12th at the Cinema Village, 22 East 12th Street in NYC. In addition, a Red Carpet, invitation-only premiere will take place at the Cinema Village on Thursday, December 11th with special guest appearances TBA. Directed by Rob Schmidt (Wrong Turn, "Masters of Horror: Right To Die") and featuring an all-star cast including Eliza Dushku (Bring It On, Wrong Turn), Cary Elwes (The Princess Bride, Saw), and Oscar-winner Timothy Hutton (Ordinary People, Sunshine State), "The Alphabet Killer" is a psychological thriller loosely based on the serial murders that shocked the citizens of Rochester, New York in the early 1970s. Anchor Bay Entertainment will release "The Alphabet Killer" theatrically in exclusive engagements in Rochester, Buffalo, Los Angeles and New York. . . . .
For enthusiasts of Dario Argento, this is great news. The arguably superior shortened, English-language cut of "Profondo Rosso" (aka "Deep Red") is finally being released on DVD in Anamorphic widescreen -- but it's in Denmark! Oh well. Nothing a little EBay can't fix. Actually, this upcoming DVD release of the film from Another World Entertainment is an 'ultimate edition', featuring both the extended Italian version and the shorter (some might argue tighter) English language version. Disc 1 will feature the 126-minute Italian director's cut. In a slight bummer, commentary won't be from Argento himself but by a Danish Argento expert: Thomas Rostock. Disc 2 will feature the short 105 minute "international version" of the film.
There's not enough sci-fi horror being produced these days. So it's good to see one title is around the corner: "Plaguers." Here's some official poster art for this fear film about a band of "sexy space pirates." Here's official synopsis: When a band of sexy space pirates hijack a fuel-transport vessel bound for Earth, an alien virus known only as "Thanatos" is accidentally released. The contagion mutates its victims, transforming them one after another into ravenous, demonic creatures. Pirates and crew must join together to destroy the undead PLAGUERS as the ship nears Earth, threatening to infect the entire planet. "Plaguers" was directed by Brad Sykes, who has been helming direct-to-video horror movies since the late 1990s, beginning with "Camp Blood." . .
It's been the stuff of legend. The pretty bad 1980s slasher "My Bloody Valentine" was badly truncated for its theatrical release, with a lot of the gore scenes that turned up in magazines like Fangoria totally cut out of the released film. An uncut version never saw the light of day. Click here for our brief review of the original. This January, at long last, the uncut version of "My Bloody Valentine" looks set to be unleashed to the world. It should be fun to see, although the movie was simply so weak that it's hard to imagine that the addition of some gore is really going to improve things all that much. January 13 is the date the moldie oldie hits the streets courtesy of Lionsgate, in time for the January 16 release of Patrick Lussier's "My Bloody Valentine 3-D" in theaters. .
Lionsgate has unveiled artwork and specs for "Midnight Meat Train" due to hit DVD and Blu-Ray February 17. Extras to the under-released film will be an "Anatomy of a Murder- the Making of The Midnight Meat Train" featurette, a "World of Clive Barker" featurette, and a "Mahogany's Bag" feature, whatever that means. . . . . .
Actually to call it a horror movie is a bit of a stretch. But the teen/romance/vampire film beat out James Bond at the box office! As reported in today's New York Times: 'Twilight' took a giant bite out of the North American box office over the weekend, selling an estimated $70.6 million in tickets and proving that a wholesome love story can still turn out a huge young-adult audience. So it looks like the most successful vampire movie of all time is going to be a teen romance.. . . .
Breck Eisner's remake of George Romero's "The Crazies" has scored actor Timothy Olyphant as its lead actor. Olyphant, seen in the movie "Hitman," will play a sherriff in a town infected with "the crazies." The script was pennned by Scott Korsar ("The Machinist") and Ray Wright ("Plulse," ugh). George Romero is executive producing. Look for the film Sept. 25, 2009.. .
January 9, 2009 will mark the third After Dark Horror Fest and the final film in the lineup has just been announced: the Korean shocker "Voices," from director Ki-hwan Oh. Other films in the lineup include "Autopsy," "The Broken," "The Butterfly Effect 3: Revelations," "Dying Breed," "From Within," "Perkins' 14" and "Slaughter." . . . .
The "Special SS Edition" DVD of "Blitzkrieg - Escape from Stalag 69" box art has been revealed this week, along with a release date of December 15, 2008. The Special Edition will feature the full, uncut directors’ version of the film, deleted scenes, director's commentary, production stills, bloopers, a short film, trailer, and the original "Schindler's Lust" short that inspired the making of the film. . . . . .
The last Dario Argento movie still not on DVD is about to get a release. "Four Flies on Grey Velvet" will be released by Myra Communications February 24 in the U.S. Extras include the teaser trailer, original trailer, English opening and closing credits and extensive poster and photo gallery. This film is the third in Dario Argento's Animal Trilogy in the early 1970s that started with "The Bird with the Crystal Plumage" and "The Cat o' Nine Tails". It currently is the only film of his that is unavailable on VHS or DVD in a legitimate version, either domestically or internationally with the exception of the long out of print obscure French VHS. Digital bootlegs show up on P2P sites with poor quality in image and sound.
With "Twilight" sure to shake up the PG-13 box office this weekend, it seems like a good time to look back at "modern" vampire films of the past 50 years or so. Which one is the best? . . . . .
David Goyer, writer of the "Blade" franchise and the new "Batman" films, is helming a new movie, "The Unborn." Hopefully it will be better than "Blade Trinity," which he also directed. Sometimes the soul of a dead person has been so tainted with evil that it is denied entrance to heaven. It must endlessly wander the borderlands between worlds, desperately searching for a new body to inhabit. And sometimes it actually succeeds. Writer/director David Goyer (Blade: Trinity, The Invisible, Batman Begins) gives a terrifying glimpse into the life of the undead in The Unborn, a supernatural thriller that follows a young woman pulled into a world of nightmares when a demonic spirit haunts her and threatens everyone she loves. Casey Beldon (Odette Yustman) hated her mother for leaving her as a child.
The limited theatrical release "Splinter" has a DVD date of January 27, and cover art has just been revealed. Directed by Toby Wilkins, "Splinter" had a limited theatrical release on October 31, 2008 and stars Shea Whigham, Paulo Costanzo, Jill Wagner, and Rachel Kerbs. "Splinter" won six awards at the Screamfest Horror Film Festival: Best Editing, Best Score, Best Special Effects, Best Make-Up, Best Directing and Best Picture. . . . .
Variety is reporting that the "Jonah Hex" DC Comics horror adaptation is running into some problems. Josh Brolin was set to star as the title character. Today's Variety reports: Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor have dropped out as the directors of "Jonah Hex," the DC Comics property that is expected to headline "W." and "Milk" star Josh Brolin as a partly disfigured gunslinger and bounty hunter. Neveldine and Taylor wrote the script, but their exit as directors was attributed to "creative differences." The studio is moving quickly to set a new director, determined to keep Brolin in the fold for a spring start. Doesn't sound good for the "Hex" movie, does it? Apparently Warner Bros. is still determined to go forward without the two guys who were driving the project. Both of them were behind that action movie "Crank" too. I definitely remember this comic from the 1970s and it certainly would make an interesting film.
If there was ever a movie that could not be remade it would be 1972's "Last House on the Left," but as we all know it's happening. Here are the first photos from the production. Sara Paxton stars Mari Collingwood in Rogue Pictures' remake of "Last House on the Left," which is being directed by Dennis Illiadis. The film also stars Rhys Coiro, Martha MacIsaac and Riki Lindhome. . . .
One of the best movies of the year is easily "Timecrimes" (check out our advanced review here). It hits theaters next month. Here's a preliminary list of where you can catch it. 12/12/2008 West Hollywood, CA: Sunset 5 New York, NY: Sunshine Cinema 12/19/2008 Chicago, IL: Landmark's Century Centre Cinema 1/2/2009 Nashville, TN: Belcourt Theatre 1/9/2009 San Antonio, TX: Santikos Bijou @ Crossroads 6 1/24/2009 Rochester, NY: Dryden Theatre More theaters will be added too, so watch out for it.. . .
First off, the George Romero-produced series "Tales From the Darkside" is finally getting a proper DVD release on February 10. Check out the cover art for that. In addition, cover art for the February 24 "Last House on the Left" special edition has emerged. And if that wasn't enough, there's cover art for the Season 2 DVD release of the "Friday the 13th" TV series, hitting stores February 10 as well. . .
Striking DVD next Tuesday from Dimension Extreme, "The Zombie Diaries" is the second mockumentary about a zombie apocalypse to hit DVD this year -- the first being George Romero's "Land of the Dead." Part of a new wave of mockumentary horror, the film has been well received by some critics and you can expect to see eSplatter's own review later this week. We were lucky enough to catch up with one of the film's co-directors, Michael Bartlett, to discuss the making of the UK's first and so far only zombie-apocalypse mockumentary film, which is enjoying a global release. HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE IDEA FOR 'ZOMBIE DIARIES'? I saw a film called 'Ever Since The World Ended', which was a post-apocalyptic documentary showing the world after it has been devastated by an unknown virus. I liked the premise but wanted to see more of the apocalyptic world; I wanted to see empty streets and ghost towns; I wanted to see the sheer savagery that would be caught on camera in a lawless society. Kevin and I have always been very big horror fans, and we decided to move forwards with a film that essentially mixed the Blair Witch Cinema Verite style documenting the post-apocalyptic world, with the classic zombie movie. The reason for this is that we are both big fans of Romero's films, and zombie movies were making a resurgence in the market-place. As much as you love an idea, it is important to ensure it has some sort of a shot commercially, especially if you want to continue to work in the movie business. HAD YOU CONSIDERED MAKING IT A STANDARD NARRATIVE FILM INSTEAD OF A MOCKUMENTARY? No. The hook was 'Blair Witch meets Night of the Living Dead' - totally original at the time, so that is exactly what we wanted to do.
Well, zombie films have finally become totally mainstream. The director of "Quantum of Solace" is set to direct "World War Z." As reported in Variety: Paramount has set "Quantum of Solace" director Marc Forster to helm "World War Z," based on the Max Brooks bestselling novel about a worldwide infestation of flesh-eating zombies. "Changeling" scribe J. Michael Straczynski is writing the screenplay, and Brad Pitt's Plan B is producing. Brooks -- the son of Mel Brooks and Anne Bancroft -- wrote a detailed tale in which a researcher for the U.N. Postwar Commission interviews survivors from countries all over the world, 10 years after the crisis, to gather a first-person post-mortem on a war that obliterated every country on the map. Well, zombie films have become such a dime a dozen these days that maybe it is time for the subgenre to take a little break for a while. When the makers of the latest James Bond and Clint Eastwood films start making them ...
Hannibal Pictures released a "promo reel" for Dario Argento's forthcoming thriller starring Adrien Brody. There are rumors of a title change in the works as well. . . . .
Undeniably one of the most hotly anticipated horror movies of 2009 is "The Children" from the director of "The Killing Gene." The buzz on the street is that it's a great movie. About 10 new photos have just sprung up from the British film, which is being pitched at AFM. Tom Shankland, the director of the "Killing Gene" (aka "Waz"), is back with a new horror film apparently about evil kids! Check out the official site here. The film, which stars Jeremy Sheffield, Rachel Shelley, Stephen Campbell, Eva Birthistle, Hannah Tointon, and Eva Sayer, sounds more than a little like "Island of the Damned." During a relaxing Christmas vacation, parents have to fight for survival as the children begin to turn on them. Ugh, don't you hate it when that happens? No release date is set for this UK film, which is clearly one to look forward to. . . .
This "sales trailer" for the Clive Barker "Book of Blood" film being repped by Essential Entertainment at the American Film Market has emerged online. Sophie Ward stars as a paranormal researcher whose investigations lead her to a college student who apparently channelsmessages from the dead. Their sexual relationship bridges the living and dead in this movie directed by John Harrison and co-written with Darin Silverman. . . . .
Relentless. What started as a harmless prank spins out of control, turning medical science into an avenging angel of death in "Red Mist" (aka FreakDog) from the director of "Shrooms." It makes its DVD debut on February 10, 2009. For dangerous and depraved loner Kenneth (Andrew Lee Potts), life at the hospital where he works is a series of endless torments from a group of ambitious medical students. But when they decide to teach him “a lesson,” he ends up in a coma and practically brain dead. Guilt-ridden Catherine (Kebbel), determined to save his life, administers a powerful and untested cocktail of drugs to the coma victim.
"Frontiers" was one of the coolest horror movies of last year and proof perfect that no one is making better fear films than the French these days. Director Xavier Gens is now helming "City of Shadows" for Overlook Entertainment. Overlook reports: Paris, 1661: The City of Lights is a maze of streets filled with both dirt and enlightenment, a true paradise for all sorts of thieves and bandits where no one can walk about without risking his wealth and his life with every step. The latest lieutenant general of the police apponted by Louis XIV, Nicolas De La Reynie, has his hands full with a sordid spree of murders by poison. He probes deeply into the fantastic “Court of Miracles”, a mysterious and unknown city impenetrably buried in the heart of Paris with its own rules and its own king ... . . .
