A Nasty Shock for One Local Resident

One local resident had a nasty shock a few weeks ago, and is still recovering from it.  Mr Harrison, who is 74, was handed a letter by a policeman on a motorbike, for which he had to sign.  The letter contained a court summons, instructing him to present himself at court the following morning.  Obviously worried about what it was all about, Ray rushed to see his solicitor with his wife. The solicitor could find no information at all, so the following day they all turned up at court in Torrevieja, without a clue what for.  Even in the building no one would give the solicitor any further information.   He asked Ray if he had had an argument with a neighbour or if he owed any money, all of which were given negative answers.  At midday an interpreter arrived and they all entered the courtroom.  The charge was ….armed robbery!  Apparently a man of the same name had been living in San Luis, and had held up a British woman up in Orihuela, then demanded 150,000 euros for her safe release.  She had known her aggressor and given his name.

Murcian in British X Factor

A Murcian singer, Ruth Lorenzo, has been selected as a finalist for the British edition of X Factor.  Readers who have British TV will have seen this sprightly Spaniard make her debut last Saturday.  Ruth used to sing in the Polaris World Urbanisation at Torre Pacheco.  She is 25 and feels most comfortable singing pop rock.

BIRDWATCHERS NEEDN’T FOOT THE BILL

Gran Alacant needs you!The nature reserve and popular home to many different a fascinating species of birds, El Clot, in Gran Alacant is to get smartened up at last. For years twitchers and nature lovers have enjoyed the reserve for either a peaceful stroll or to sit in one of the hides and observe the wildlife getting on with its day, or night. Within the next couple of months Santa Pola town hall hope to get on with the revamp and now that additional funding has been offered by the Diputacion de Alicante, who will put 61,000 euros into the project, Santa Pola Ayuntamiento are ready to get on with the work – putting in 40,000 euros themselves. The work to be done on El Clot is long overdue and has been accelerated since the population boom in the area over the last few years which has seen the place grow ever more popular. Another problem is during the summer when sun-seekers have been parking amongst the tress, either picnicking or leaving the car for the day while they hit the beach. The mess at the end of each day is horrendous and, even after the clean-up boys have been around, there are still lots of litter floating around – blown about by the wind. The town hall would like volunteers to come forward and help- in the clean-up and in the planting of new shrubs and bushes to give the Clot a new lease of life. Hopefully, with the help of interested locals, El; Clot can be restored to its former glory and in the future see even more wildlife coming into the area. If you’re interested in volunteering to help get the Clot tidied up, either call in at the Gran Alacant Municipal Centre or contact me here at The Leader.

30 MORE AIRLINES COULD GO BUST

Credit Crunch and Fuel Prices to BlameAt least 30 airlines could go bust in the next three months, the chief executive of British Airways warned last month following the collapse of XL Leisure Group.Willie Walsh said there were many other "weak" airlines worldwide that he expected would suffer the same fate as Britain's third largest tour operator, XL. Over 65,000 holidaymakers were left stranded by the collapse of XL Leisure with hundreds of people arriving at UK airports to find their flights had been cancelled and many stranded abroad until other flights could be arranged. The decline of XL was blamed on the soaring fuel prices and the global economic situation. It is believed that more than a million people, who normally fly abroad from the UK, will not travel by air this year due to the increased flight prices and the financial uncertainty of many large businesses. However, this is not a new situation, in the early 1990s, Air Europe went to the wall and before that Laker Airways collapsed in the 1980s and, for those that can remember, Courtline went out of business in the 1960s.
