One of those worst nightmare accidents happened yesterday afternoon on I-90 near West Springfield, Exit 3, when six people died in a horrible head-on accident. A van traveling east lost control, crossed the grass median, and slammed into a car traveling west. Five people in the van and one person in the car died. One person in each vehicle survived and were taken to Hamot. Buckle up people. None of the victims wore seat belts and the two survivors were wearing seat belts. Due to the threat of inclement weather, today's Allegheny College Commencement ceremony will be held indoors, in the Wise Center Sports Forum. Tickets are required for admission to the ceremony. Closed circuit television viewing in Shafer Auditorium is available to guests with children and those not holding tickets. This set-up offers comfortable seating, close-up viewing of the graduates as they receive their degrees, and the ability to easily come and go. A reception in the Campus Center will follow the ceremony. The Commencement ceremony at 10 am will honor 554 graduates - thought to be the largest class in the college's history - and feature an address by Allegheny president Richard J Cook. The Lakeview Estate, including the Lakeview Eastate Personal Care Home business, has been listed for sale for $1,450,000. Many of you might remember this as the Saint Barnabas Home. It's nearly 5 1/2 acres on Lake Erie with a 17,600 sq ft facility, a chapel and a 2 bedroom cottage home. Hickory Hollow Farms in Girard has been placed for sale with a listed price of $549,000. Along with Mothers Day, three area colleges have their commencements this weekend. Hotels are packed and there are waits at restaurants. The Edinboro University of Pennsylvania commencement will be held today at 1 pm at McComb Fieldhouse with 831 students receiving degrees. The Gannon University commencement will be held today at 2 pm at the Tullio Arena. The Army ROTC Commissioning Ceremony takes place at 8:30 am at the Waldron Campus Center. The 655 graduates include 24 students who will be receiving doctor of physical therapy degrees, two receiving doctorates in counseling psychology, 247 receiving master's degrees, 358 receiving bachelor's degrees, and 24 receiving associate's degrees. His Eminence Theodore McCarrick, PhD, DD, Archbishop Emeritus of Washington, will be the ceremony's keynote speaker. The Allegheny College commencement will be held Sunday at 10 am with 554 students graduating. Reuters reported that GE close to a 170 million euro ($263 million) deal with Bosnia to rebuild their rail system. It doesn't hurt that there are hundreds of Bosnians in the Erie area that arrived here as refugees. GE manufactures locomotives in Erie and provides every rail part and service imaginable. The Erie Bayfront Convention Center released a summary of events which shows the facility is well ahead of projections. In 2007, the convention center was projected to hold 56 events with attendance of 26,800. For the first five months it was open, it hosted 157 events with a total attendance of 62,736. For the first quarter of 2008, the Erie Bayfront Convention Center has hosted 8 consumer trade shows, 6 banquets / wedding receptions, 52 meetings and 5 other events. Live thoroughbred racing returns to the Erie, PA, today Friday, May 9, when Presque Isle Downs and Casino commences its 2008 meeting. Presque Isle's 100-day season will extend through September 27, with a daily post time of 5:30 pm. Admission and general parking throughout the meet will be FREE. Last year, Presque Isle's inaugural meet was 25 days in length, and generated averages of 2,851 in daily attendance, $58,257 in daily on-track wagering and $585,680 in daily wagering from all sources. Last year, 25.5 percent of the races at Presque Isle were won by favorites. Thirty-five percent of the races were decided by winning margins of a half-length or less. The average return for a two-dollar win ticket was $15.96, and the average return for a two-dollar exacta was $126.65. On May 9, 2004, Brittany Legler died of a heart attack from continual beatings by her adoptive mother Lisa Iarussi. Iarussi was sentenced to 7-14 years. Hope that the Erie County Office of Children and Youth is aware of the anniversary. Ramond James Financial Services Inc purchased additional shares of Erie Insurance (Nasdaq: ERIE), bringing their current holdings to 11,350 shares as shown by filings made public on Wednesday. Erie City Council voted unanimously to go after the money the city loaned for the dead Koehler Square Brewery project. The city probably won't see a dime as National City Bank and the state get any money first but maybe it will teach future would-be developers that government funds aren't just free money. The Greater Erie Board of Realtors released the April 2008 real estate sales figures for Erie County. The numbers include all sales in which a property transfer tax was paid including residential and commercial properties as well as vacant land. In April 2008, 360 properties were sold for $39,853,758.This compares to the 369 sold in April 2007 for $50,385,529. The 2007 sales figures were artificially inflated by a few big commercial transactions including the closing of the sale of all the area Perkins Restaurants.
