Advent 7096 laptop, no on screen volume indication.

I have somehow "lost" the on screen indication of volume level. Have re-installed audio drivers and the sound is working, just no on screen indication. Have gone through all the options in Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices. Would appreciate advice on how to get it back. -- Kenny Cargill

Is there a way to compare dates from week to week?

We link several smaller schedules to a master schedule and I would like to compare the dates on the master schedule from one week to another to see which dates have changed. The functional leads keep slipping dates without informing anyone and I want to find the tasks that have the "finish" dates moved out without having to manually scour through two schedules.

Windows Media Player - some files don't play

When I click on a video clip from a website a download pop up comes up saying that it is saving the file to a temporary file. WMP then comes up and the playlist is empty, it wont load or play the file that was just downloaded. Two questions - Why does it download to a temporary file - I would rather it just started playing the file - can I change something to get it to do this? and Where are those temporary files - I can't find them to try and drag and drop them into the play list. Not sure if that would work anyway. thanks

How to initialize new HDD? Not found anywhere (as admin).

Vista 64 Home Premium. Where is the tab/command to initialize (fdisk?) a new HDD? I am logged in as Administrator (system says so) with full control/permission. I can see the hard drives in the Device Manager/Disk Drives. All drives are "good" per the controller and I can see them as physical devices on the computer. They all show as "Not Initialized" when I ask each to populate the Volumes info, and there is no obvious/apparent way to do it. Nothing on the controller shows it either. Tried "Simple New Volume" under Disk Management-- doesn't/won't work because drive is not initialized.... One drive = one big partition = one drive letter.

Vista is the most amazing OS ever!

I hate people who badmouth vista! First of all you dumbs*** linux lovers, there is too many compatability isues whith linux, can't even use my wireless card. Next for the mac people. Macs are too expensive, not enough software runs on them, and the specs on them new aren't too great.Vista has so many great features and is very secure. If it slows your pc down, then you ar stupid and should upgrade parts. if you use vista right and don't mess with it... you will not have one single problem. I know about 20 people personally that run various versions of vista and not one of them has any problems. XP sucks, there is not enough features. For instance, conect to a network projector, uac, mobility center on laptops, BUILT IN WINDOWS UPDATE!(ALL UPDATES)! just to name a few. I highly reccomend that everyone buy vista now.

Replacing hard drives and resizing

I have a HP DL360 G3 with 2 * drives in a raid 1 config on a 2003 server. There is little space left and I want to upgrade the drives. The raid is handled by the built in smart array 5i controller Is it be possible to remove 1 drive and replace with larger drive and once the raid has rebuilt remove the second drive with a larger drive and again raid rebuilt. Then within windows use diskpart to resize? Is that the procedure or are there easier ways?

Is it worth it from XP

On Thu, 15 May 2008 17:31:01 -0500, Brian Taylor wrote: > Is it worth it upgrading from XP. I might need a new computer. My view is that you're going about this backward. A change of operating system should be driven by need, not just because there is a new version available. Are you having a problem with Windows XP that you expect Vista to solve? Do you have or expect to get new hardware or software that is supported in Vista, but not in XP? Is there some new feature in Vista that you need or yearn for? Does your job require you have skills in Vista? Are you a computer hobbyist who enjoys playing with whatever is newest? If the answer to one or more of those questions is yes (and your hardware is adequate for Vista), then you should get Vista. Otherwise most people should stick with what they have. There is *always* a learning curve and a potential for problems when you take a step as big as this one, regardless of how wonderful whatever you're contemplating moving to is. Sooner or later you'll have to upgrade (to Vista or its successor) because you'll want support for hardware or software that you can't get in XP, but don't rush it. If you were contemplating buying a new computer (and you say that you might), I would unhesitatingly recommend Vista, but I think upgrading to anything new (Vista or anything else) should only be done when there's a compelling reason to do so. -- Ken Blake, Microsoft MVP - Windows Desktop Experience Please Reply to the Newsgroup
