The Acer Aspire One is a 8.9" netbook with a starting price that is aimed to undercut nearly all the current market competitors. The base Aspire One, which includes an 8GB SSD and Linux starts at $329, which is far under anything else that has the Intel Atom processor.
Minilaptops are among the hottest new products this year and with the back-to-school sales season upon us, I created a list of items to help you choose the right one. The devices, which are becoming popularly known as netbooks, or my favorite term, "laptots," have caught on because they offer people a mobile, easy way to wirelessly access the Web.
The ASUS M50VM is a well-built 15.4-inch desktop replacement notebook based on the latest Intel Centrino 2 platform. The M50VM is designed for multimedia enthusiasts and gamers. It features a powerful Core 2 Duo processor, 500GB hard drive, and an Nvidia GeForce video card with a whopping 1GB of memory. Read on to see how the M50VM did in our tests.
Dell whetted our appetites for the new E-series Latitudes through some "leaks" at Engadget in March 2008. Among the features which caught my attention were the 14.1" WXGA+ LED backlit display, a target entry weight of 2kg (4.25lb), an eSATA port and a backlit keyboard.
The new 14-inch ThinkPad T400 is the latest Lenovo notebook based off of the Intel Montevina platform. This computer offers all new features such as hybrid graphics, LED backlit displays, and power-saving refinements that let the notebook get extraordinary battery life. With all these changes taking place, Lenovo has also managed to keep the notebook looking as classic (boring) as ever, just how ThinkPad lovers like it.
Toshiba has updated its notebook range of late by adding a more curved design to its machines. However, the Satellite Pro U400, which is aimed at small businesses, has a rather basic feel about it. The black and silver chassis is boxy and plain but the build quality makes it reassuringly tough. Weighing 2.1kg, this is a semi-portable notebook designed with the corporate user in mind. Measuring 315 x 225 x 40mm, this is a rather bulky but compact machine.
ASUS silently announced a new group of laptops this weekend, reminding consumers that ASUS makes full-featured notebooks in addition to their popular Eee PC netbooks. The all new F6V, F8Vr, B50A, G50V, and G71V come in sizes ranging from 13 inches to 17 inches and have something to offer everyone from serious students to hardcore gamers.
The T500 Thinkpad is the latest 15.4" refresh of the longstanding T-series out of Lenovo. Combining the latest generation of Intel goodies, ATI Hybrid graphics, and DisplayPort connection this notebook has many new things to offer over the previous ThinkPads. With all these changes taking place, is Lenovo keeping the ThinkPad as well built as we have come to expect, or has some quality slipped through the cracks? In this review we cover all aspects of the new ThinkPad T500 and tell you if we think it deserves a spot on your desk.
The Dell Latitude E6400, the update to the D630, packs in all the essentials needed to keep road warriors productive on the go: a speedy Intel Core 2 Duo processor, long battery life, and a host of security and durability features. Factor in the revamped design, which replaces its predecessors stodgy aesthetic for one thats much more streamlined and visually appealing, and you have an excellent notebook for demanding business users.
Built for business users who roam the office halls more than they roam through airports, the Lenovo ThinkPad R500 delivers everything we like about the ThinkPad line, just in a larger package than were used to. The big screen and standout keyboard mean that desk jockeys wont have to switch to dock-connected replacements if they dont want to, and the $1,237 price is very reasonable for the performance and features our tested configuration delivered.
For some users, the new generation of ultraportable notebooks comes close to embodying the Holy Grail for road warriors. Their laptop-like keyboards make them more usable for typing tasks than smart phones, but they are lighter and cheaper than traditional laptops. The original Asus Eee PC, for instance, cost about $400 and weighed about two pounds when it was introduced last October.
Every once in a while a system comes through our offices that obliterates the gaming performance scores of those that preceded it. Currently, that notebook is the Alienware Area-51 m17x, an overachieving beast that sliced through most games without a hitch. We love its matte black design, customizable glowing features, and killer gaming scores. And you may have to sell your car to buy the configuration we testeda whopping $5,598. While the m17x blazing speeds got our adrenaline pumping, its flaws gave us pause.
The all new Dell Inspiron 13 follows the design direction of the new Studio series, as well as the XPS M1330 and XPS M1530. This sleek looking notebook offers a slot-loading optical drive, and unlike most Dell notebooks, is sold exclusively by Wal-Mart and Walmart.com. With a starting price of less than $700, this notebook is destined to be quite popular during the back to school buying rush.
Although our review unit came configured with a fingerprint reader and Bluetooth, these options are not available in the production model.Gateway shook up the gaming notebook market earlier this year by pairing a high-end graphics card with a middle-of-the-road processor in the P-6831FX.
The HP Pavilion dv5t is the replacement for the ever-popular dv6000 series notebooks. It is a full redesign that includes many new features. The dv5t is based on the latest Intel "Montevina" Centrino 2 mobile technology and is available with powerful dedicated graphics.
Today Dell officially announced a family refresh of Dell's commercial notebook line, the new Dell Latitude E-series notebooks. Most people interested in the new Latitude notebooks have already seen information leaked onto the web over the last few months, but now we have full specs and the new notebooks are available for immediate purchase over on the Dell website.
Today were putting the Lenovo x200 through its course. The x200 is the smaller brother to the now infamous x300, and an upgrade to the x61 series of earlier years (best in class for ultraportable as far as were concerned). Although being smaller, and lacking an optical drive, the x200 doesnt seem too tiny nor as thin as the x300, and developing most of its hardships with the battery bay and standard tracking devices.
Sony is best known for its ultraportable notebooks, which are among the best on the market. It hasn't faired so well with its more cost-effective machines, largely due to their specification never matching the rest of the crowd. Take the Sony VAIO VGN-NR31J/S, it's a great looking machine that looks like it would make a great desktop replacement.
Fujitsu recently announced the addition of the LifeBook T5010 to their Tablet PC line-up. The T5010 is the successor to the T4220 and it sports a 2.26GHz Core 2 Duo processor. The T5010 also has a 13.3" active digitizer display that is very nice looking. This business focused tablet is great for taking notes and giving presentations. Check out what we think about this sleek new LifeBook and how it performs.
