If you haven't used a Logitech Harmony remote then you do not know what you are missing. The universal remotes are great for controlling multiple devices, they are very intelligent, and they can be updated with codes from your Mac or PC. Today, Logitech has quitely released the Harmony 510, an entry level remote with most of the great features that you expect from the harmony series. The device looks like many of the low-end devices, but it has a few things that set it apart.
What I like best about the Logitech Harmony remotes is that you can also program them with macros to automate technology tasks such as playing a movie or switching your whole AV system from TiVo to Satellite. The Logitech Harmony 510 can do all of the basics, but only for five devices. It does have the requisite LCD screen, gobs of buttons, and the USB connection for updating the device.
The Logitech Harmony 510 only costs $99 which makes it a sweet remote at a great entry level price. Give a harmony a try and you will never go back to your generic All-in-One again.

Sometimes, designers take a look at devices and ask why we do things a certain way. Take fire extinguishers, for example. They are confusing to use with a canister in one hand and a hose in the other. Controls are hardly instinct, so designer Adam Scott has created the X Sting Wish.
As you can see, the X Sting Wish is a regular fire extinguisher, but with a definite futuristic twist. In fact, if Ripley from
Aliens needed to put out a fire, she would definitely use this. The design is like that of a heavy machine gun that is "easily used, easily recognized". So all you need to do is point and shoot and fire on the fire.
So, are we looking at a future where the X Sting Wish will be on the walls of office buildings to be used "In Case of Emergency". That is definitely my wish for the X Sting Wish.

If you haven't see the new BlackBerry Storm it is a pretty good looking phone. I know my wife, a BlackBerry user, is very excited about it; she has always had an odd sort of jealous superiority complex about my iPhone. The fact of the matter is her BlackBerry Pearl does things perfectly for her job, but she likes the look and feel of the iPhone. The Storm will combine RIM's BlackBerry-ness with the better at everything else iPhones-ness. Heck, the Storm will even feature an application store.
The BlackBerry Application center will debut with the BlackBerry OS 4.7 and the Storm device. It will, get this, feature downloadable applications, be browsable via the Storm's touch screen, receive updates and manage application installation directly from the phone. Does this sound a bit familiar? No one can blame Research In Motion for this. Heck, Apple's App Store has been an absolute hit. But before the app store, there was this thing called the internet that seemed to be pretty handy for downloading applications.
The Apple App Store and the BlackBerry Application Center are not the new concept. The idea that these phones are become mini-computers - completely ubiquitous and fantastically powerful is the newness. As these devices become faster, more intuitive, and storage prices come down, we will see application stores for every device and carrier. I just can't wait to see what the next big thing will be. Any guesses? I would love to hear them.

Have you ever heard of
lock bumping or
lock picking? The fact of the matter is that traditional, basic locks are not very secure. Door locks are a technology that has been around for hundreds of years, and in that time, very little has changed. The AP501 Digital lock is here to change all of that.
The AP501 Digital lock is a waterproof, zink-alloy and steel lock that installs in your regular door. It features a keypad or a wireless tag for entry. And, according to the manufacturer, it is "tank tough", although I am not entirely sure what that means. I think if a tank wanted to get into my house, it wouldn't worry about the lock.
The door lock is easy to install, and it honestly looks pretty nice on a door. I also like how it modernizes and speeds up entry into a house. Having a RFID key-tag is a huge convenience when it comes to getting in a door with your hands full or during bad weather.
The lock does seem very nice and very secure, but it does cost $350. How much is your piece of mind worth?

As much as I liked the last James Bond redux film, I am really ticked off by the sequel's inane name of
Quantum of Solace. Still, it appears that the unreleased movie has already spawned a new gadget with a James Bond Quantum of Solace laptop.
This laptop is a Sony Z series that has an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, a 128GB SSD or 320GB hard drive, 3G connectivity, 13.3 inch LED backlit LCD, and Blu-ray drive. The only thing that sounds spy-related is the fingerprint reader and Motion eye camera.
Well, that sounds good, but will cost about $4,000 for this. You could probably get another laptop for a cheaper price, but it won't have the 007 logo.

Imagine having a portable projector that is rechargeable and can play media without a computer. This dream projector would also have to have a high contrast ratio, a good resolution, and a small footprint. Oh yeah, and I wouldn't want to pay more than $600 for the thing. If this sounds too much like a fantasy, then LG must be having the same dream I have.
The LG HS102 Ultra Mobile Projector will feature a native 800 X 600 resolution and both 4:3 and 16:9 screen ratios. It also has a built in DiVX player that can decode data off of flash media without the need of a PC. Its PhlatLight LED projection system is capable of a 2,000:1 contrast ratio, and it has a built in rechargeable battery that should live for about two hours. Nice huh?
LG has announced it for South Korea, and it is priced at about US $555. LG has not announced for the states, but I hope they do soon. Moving to South Korea is a drastic step to take to get a new projector.

Some of you may remember Schoolhouse Rock, educational and animated rock videos that used to air in between Saturday Morning Cartoons on ABC. One of them was called "Do the Circulation", and it was all about how important circulation was to the bloodstream.
It appears that High Tech Health wants to improve our Circulation even more with the aptly named Circulation Booster. It works by using electro stimulation on the feet, and this "pleasant tickling" somehow makes the blood flow better and reduces fluid retention around the ankles.
The company states that all that is required of the user is 30 minutes on the Circulation booster, and they will be on their way to better health. Let's hope it is worth the £298 price tag.

Have you heard of Toshiba's SCiB prototype batteries? If you haven't, they are set to redefine the way that laptops and other rechargeable gadgets perform. Keep in mind, Toshiba is demoing them as prototypes and they are still a little far off from production, but when they hit, it will be great.
SCiB, or Super Charge Ion Batteries recharge to 90% capacity in 10 minutes and will last longer than traditional lithium-ion batteries. They don't explode when they are crushed or overheat, and they are good for 5,000 - 6,000 recharge cycles. That means they will outlive regular lithium-ion batteries by a at least 4,000 or so cycles.
At the Ceatec electronics exhibition in Chiba, Japan, Toshiba demonstrated a working model of the SCiB, and it did actually perform as promised. At this point, the batteries are expected to hit the market sometime next year.

I'm a guy, and I would never wear anything called Sparkling Allure, Contemporary Elegance or Evening Classic. In fact, I am not even sure what
Allure is, but apparently, my wife does, or at least that is what Sony Ericsson is betting on.
Sony Ericsson has announced the MBW-200 Ladies Bluetooth watches. This line of watches will feature a small OLED display that can connect with your Bluetooth capable phone. The screen will display your incoming caller ID, text message alerts, email notifications, and calendar alarms. It will also feature music controls for music playing phones that you might have.
The different MBW-200 Ladies Bluetooth watches go beyond the basics. After all, what makes them special for the ladies? They also feature gold rims, crystal decorations, color coordinated straps and faces. Currently, the watches are designed to work only with Sony Ericsson phones, and are set to be released during the Q4 of 2008. As for price, my guess is expensive, although Sony has yet to verify this.

This isn't the first time we have reported on ThinkGeek products, and that is because we simply cannot resist. Especially now, as they are selling the Micro R/C 4-Channel Flying Saucer.
The palm-sized saucer is designed with four propellers which are designed to keep it hovering perfectly in the air. It comes with a remote control that looks like Nintendo or Playstation designed it, and the two joysticks control direction and altitude.
The saucer can be charged from a wall outlet in about 20 minutes, which is good for about 5-7 minutes of flight. The remote control requires about 3 AAA batteries.
You should be able to purchase the Micro R/C 4-Channel Flying Saucer at the
ThinkGeek site for about $99.99.

Cleaning and de-cluttering my desk was
probably certainly not drove Xerox and their research and development on their new paper concept, but it will certainly be the result. Xerox has been developed, for tech demo purposes, erasable paper. Don't laugh; it is actually a very cool concept.
I don't know how many times I have printed out meeting agendas, quick emails, directions to an event, or even lecture notes that were absolutely useless to me minutes after using them. All of this paper ends up cluttering my desk and eventually in my trash. If the printing on this paper would just "go away," then I could reuse the paper, and that is exactly what Xerox is thinking.
Xerox's erasable paper concept causes the "ink" on the page to simply fade away after 24 hours. Xerox has said, defending this concept, that 40% of office printed material become useless and obsolete within 24 hours. That is a ton of garbage that can be avoided if and when the erasable paper concept hits the streets.

If I am going to buy something, it better do more than one thing, and it better do them well. That's why I won't buy a digital photo frame, a waffle iron, or (until now) a fancy iPhone charging dock. Griffin has produced a multi-use iPhone / iPod doc that does many jobs at once. From the look of things, it does them well.
The Griffin Simplifi is a media card reader for both SD and CF flash types, a two port USB hub, and an iPod / iPhone charging base. The unit is compatible with just about every iPlayer from the 1st generation iPods to the iPhone 3G. The unit comes in a simple Apple-esque white and curved shell.
The best part is, the device only runs $69 and is
available now.
The Griffin Simplifi is the perfect unit to remove clutter from your life and desktop. It might just be multi-purposed enough to land next to my MacBook.

Sure, all of us have a cellular phone that needs constant charging. Some of us live in homes with several types of phones, so it would be good to have a charger for all of them.
This is what the USB Charger from Brando is designed to do. This charger comes with eight different connectors: Motrola I, Nokia I, Samsung, Motorola II, Nokia II, Sony Ericsson II, Siemens, Sony Ericsson I, and mini USB. It also comes with a travel bag, and a USB retractable cable.
You should be able to get the USB Multi-Cellular Phone Charger for about $18.00 on the
Brando site.

The netbook craze is staring to get a little bit
overwhelming. Just about everyone and their brother is producing one of the diminutive little buggers, and most of them are absolutely unimpressive. It simply is tough to get real performance out of such little machines. This will be changing soon if Toshiba has anything to do with it. Their new series of micro-hard drives are anything but unimpressive.
The Toshiba's MKxx29GSG series hard drives are a small but mighty group of storage devices. They are 1.8 inch, 5400 RPM drives that will have storage capacities up to 250 GB. That is going to make for some quick and large netbook hard drives, and some monstrous iPods and Zunes.
Mass production of the drives is set for November, so you should be seeing them in devices sometime early next year. The Toshiba's MKxx29GSG drives, and the addition of smaller, cooler, and more powerful Atom CPU's is fundamentally going to change the way we compute.

OK, I admit it, this post has a very, very bad title, but the idea I am writing about is very, very bad. Digital Card, a CD and DVD replication company is offering Rub & Smell CD, DVD, HD-DVD and Flex VCD disks. That's right, they are making scratch and sniff disks. These digital media disks will feature printed labels that will allow an end user to smell what you have put on the disk.
The Digital Card argues that "Multi-Sensory marketing has been deemed one of the most effective marketing types available for a variety of promotional strategies and campaigns." I disagree, I have never enjoyed opening a magazine and having the perfume stink bomb explode, nor have I every wanted to buy underwear because of the way they smelled. Now, I am not a marketing genius, but I think that Rub & Smell disks are missing a mark somewhere.
If you are interested, head over to
their website and check them out. The scents available are very interesting. Who doesn't want a Christmas Movie DVD that smells like Stinky Cheese or New Car Smell, and why pass up a back up of all of your
porn photos that smells like leather or cinnamon buns.

Have camera phones
jumped the shark? I mean, how many megapixels do you need in a mobile handset? The feature set of a camera phone are nowhere near a digital SLR or even a point and shoot digital camera. Why then, would you want to take a quick snapshot of something on a camera with such uber-high resolution?
Well, just because I don't get it doesn't mean someone out there doesn't want it. If you are seeking the ability to take camera phone photos at 3488 x 2616 resolution, then Digital Imaging Systems, a German-American developer of camera pieces and parts, has news for you. They have announced the availability of the DIS6931 9 megapixel camera module for mobile phones.
In addition to the insanely high image resolution, the DIS6931 will also feature high quality lenses, fast auto-focus, and very fast image capture speeds. Based on time-to-manufacturing estimates, 9 megapixel camera phones could be hitting the streets the first quarter of 2009.

There are gadgets I have bought because of the hype, and now they either have hit the streets via Craigslist, or are currently gathering dust. Take my son's Wii for example - its only job right now is to sit next to my PS3 and look ugly. My Amazon Kindle, on the other hand, is not one of those devices. It was purchased six months ago, and it is still getting used nearly every day. Today, Netherlands-based iRex Technologies wants to change that, but I think my Kindle is safe.
iRex Technologies is releasing the iRex Reader 1000 today, and I am a
bit interested. It is a 10.2 inch e-book reader capable of rendering MS Word, PDF, and HTML documents. Like any respectable e-book reader, it features a passive e-ink display and gobs of battery time. The iRex Reader 1000 will also, for a price, come with a bluetooth, WiFi, and a touch screen for notes and interaction. All in all it sounds very sexy. Did I mention the price?
The iRex Reader will start at $650 (my Kindle runs $359). That sexy writable screen will cost another $100 (I can take notes on my $359 Kindle), and the super-sexy wi-fi, Bluetooth and a 3G cell connection will set you back $850 (Kindle - $359).
Does the extra screen real estate warrant the $500 premium for similar features? Is my Kindle killed? Nope.

As a Nintendo Wii addict, I can honestly say that nothing spoils your game time more than getting ready to play, only to find out those wireless Wiimotes have dead batteries in them.
Of course, there are several companies that make rechargeable Wiimotes, but those do not last forever. Fortunately, Teknocreations has recently made the InCharge battery pack and charge stand with lithium polymer batteries that can last for hundreds of charges. Each charge is good enough for about 25 hours worth of gameplay, and it can somehow work without any contact with metal of any type.
Unfortunately, I don't have a price for the InCharge by Teknocreations, but it is scheduled to be out soon.

It is no secret that Google is a giant prepared to take over the world. At some point in my life, I expect that I might very well look down and see that I have been bought and will be sporting a "Google brand" tattoo. Until that happens, Google will just have to be content owning half of the internet, a
third of the browsers, and 20% of the cell phones. Yes folks, within the next year, I think nearly every cell phone (if not all smart phones) will be made by Apple, Research in Motion (Blackberry), and Google.
Google's Android mobile operating system is set to
attack be released on a HTC smartphone later this fall, and it will hit the streets for only $199. That means you will be able to get your hands on the newest touch screen phenomenon for less than most Blackberries and for the same amount as the low-end iPhone. Not only will the HTC Dream, powered by Android be priced cheaply, it will also feature a low cost data plan. Because it is Googled, the HTC Dream is bound to do internet well, and because it is HTC, it will do calls well. It sounds like the iPhone and Blackberry Thunder have some competition.
What google has going for it that Apple does not, is that Android is open sourced, and it will be on many cell phones in the near future. Apple might be selling millions of iPhones, but Android will be on hundreds of handsets. Its market share is bound to be huge. It will be interesting to see how all of this pans out in the near future.

I have shared before that I am a Mac fan, and I have been for years. I have an iPhone, MacBook, and iEverthing. So, for me, it is no surprise to me that a recent industry report is declaring that Apple's Market share grew by a whopping 60% during the second quarter of last year.
This means that Apple shipments during 2nd quarter grew from 6.6% to 10.6%. Most of that growth was pulled right out of Acer and Toshiba's pockets. The report does little to explain the growth, but I personally think it is thanks to the iHalo. That is to say that when people buy an iPhone or an iPod and they like it, they want to experience more of it. Don't get me wrong, I think Vista is a good operating system (heck, I run it on all of my Macs, and it runs better than on any similarly priced or equipped HP or Dell), but the look and feel is very different than a Mac experience. If you are a Vista lover, OS X will drive you nuts, but if you are a Mac person, Vista is crazy. iPhones and iPods have introduced the masses to Apple theory. Some people like it, and so they buy Apple.
I expect that this Apple growth trend will continue. There will be new Macs out sometime this year, and many people will flock to them. If you have any doubts about my prediction stop by an airport or a coffee shop.

When I lecture, I tend to have a presentation projector, my MacBook with a Wacom Tablet for notes, and a set of cheap (sub $100) PC speakers to push sound somewhere near my class. The end result tends to be some audience members get blasted with sound while others can't hear anything. The set-up is less than ideal, but it is affordable and portable. Logitech has a set of "directionless" speakers that promise good sound, good value, and portability. If the Logitech Z-5 Directionless speakers are as good as they seem, I am sold.
These tall speakers are omnidirectional thanks to the sound grills on all sides. This allows sound to emanate rather than be projected. Also, they are powered and pull sound through a standard USB cable, thus reducing the amount of clutter and gear that need to be toted around. I know, USB powered speakers are typically pretty weak, but these promise to be loud and powerful.
The Logitech Z-5 Speakers would make an excellent addition to a room in which people mill about, or a situation like mine where an audience is seated in a auditorium style sitting. For
$99, which is a great price if the speakers really do sound good, they might just be the thing I a looking for.

Sure, we have TiVo and other DVRs to record our shows now, but we used to use a thing called VHS tapes. Assuming that we can't find all these shows online somewhere, it would be nice to view this content on our computers.
The Pinnacle Video Transfer allows you to transfer the VHS tapes to a USB accessory. All a user has to do is connect the analog stereo audio and video inputs such as composite or S-Video. On the other end, the user attaches some USB accessory to the Pinnacle's port like a flash drive, Video iPod, or PSP. The Video Transfer can digitize the signal, and all the old TV programs will be digitized.
Of course, the quality might vary depending on how old the VHS tape is, but if you're willing to spend $100, you can try it for yourself. Now if they only made something for my old Beta tapes.

I am all for multi-function devices. I have a printer / scanner / copier, I carry a Swiss-Army knife, and own an iPhone. If I am going to plop money down for a gadget or gizmo, it better do more than one thing. TrekStor has heard my demands and answered with a combination bottle-opener / USB flash drive.
The
TrekStor USB stick CO comes in a rugged (I hope) brushed aluminum casing and features a sturdy
Guiness beverage opener. It features high-speed USB 2.0 data transfer rates, it is bootable, and it is pre-formated and ready for use. It should be both Mac and Windows friendly, and it will support Linux (Kernel 2.6 or later).
The bottle opener is one-size-fits-all, but the USB flash capacity comes in 1GB, 2,GB, 4GB, and 8GB, and 16GB. They will range from $10 to $71 depending on size, and will be available in late October. Cheers!

You might just be looking at the next big tiny thing in computing. This is the first of what is sure to be an onslaught of mini or pico projectors. This one, the 3M MPro110 mini projector, has VGA or composite inputs and is capable of projecting a reasonably large image in a dark room. It would be great for turning a iPod, PS3, or portable DVD player into a ad-hoc home theater.
The word on the street is that it is a bit dim, but it is pocket sized. The review at
Popular Science states that in a "dark room" the image is sufficient, but it sounds like you would not want to rely on this type of product (at least for now) for a high-def, high-quality home theatre set-up. Also, this unit does not have a speaker so it my be better with headphones or simply for presentations.
The MPro110 mini projector will land in the US on September 30th. The best part is that it will only run $359. For the convenience and the gee whiz factor, this price sounds like a steal.

Yesterday, I reported on the
Altec Lansing's The Orbit, an iPod speaker system. If you are still looking for an iPod dock of some kind, you might want to check out Ewoo's three new models.
The HandMusic (pictured above) comes with a remote control that is "specifically designed to match that of the player". It is compatible with A/V equipment, and it has a 1.8 inch color LCD display for S-Video viewing. It should be available soon for about $200.
The eFizz dock has an added bonus of sound for the increased price. It comes with a 2.1-channel sound system, with speakers and subwoofer that can put out 70W of RMS power. You should be able to get this for about $600.
The eFizz Travel is designed for just that, as it can play up to 20 hours worth of playback on a single charge. This one is available for $200.

Let me start by saying that this is only a concept - but it is a freaking cool one. Imagine being able to print on toast. You read correctly - what if you could take images from from the internet or your computer and print (burn them into) toast. Hear me out; it is not as silly as it sounds.
This design competition finalist, in a competition by Electrolux, has some fantastic potential. Designer Sung Bae Chang's design would allow you to print images or designs on food for weddings, parties, or simply to entertain friends. Taken to the extreme, this device could be used to print a mornings news on your toast so you could completely streamline your mornings.
Ok, so it does sound a little silly, but I still think it is cool. The way this USB equipped toaster works, is there are a series of burning "modules" that can adjust themselves to print (by cooking) into the bread. Technically, any image could be displayed on your bread. It could make for the most entertaining BLT you have ever read eaten.

For those of you who still don't have a speaker for your iPhone or iPod, then you might want to give the Orbit from Altec Lansing a try.
The Orbit, or Orbit MP3 iM237, is a single speaker sound system that attaches to your iPod or iPhone via headphone jack, but does not drain the power. The Orbit is actually powered by three AAA batteries which enable it to play for 24 hours non-stop.
The Orbit comes with a special carrying case for about $39.95.

Have you protected your laptop from all the nasties out there? Is your virus scan software and your adware scanner working? What about a S.M.A.R.T. monitor for your hard drive? How about a blessing from a Japanese monk?
No seriously. Have you had your laptop blessed? Over in Japan, at the Akihabara Shrine, visitors show up every week to have their laptops blessed for protection from viruses, BSOD's, and other sneaky problems. I have been known to pray that a new piece of hardware or software doesn't make Windows Vista freak out, but these Shinto Monks have taken things a bit far.
If your standard protection measures aren't working out for you, head over to the Kanda-Myojin Shinto shrine in Tokyo. You can have your machine blessed, and you can pick up a holy microchip of protection.
Seriously...

In case you were hiding under a rock hiding from today's scheduled "
end of the world," yesterday was a major day for Apple and their darling iPod family. Oh yeah, and Steve Jobs is not dead as was previously rumored.
First, the new iPod Nano brings a new form factor. Gone is the fat and wide iPod nano, and its replacement is a sleek and sexy, curved tall beauty. It is crazy thin and is said to fit well in your hand. The 8GB unit will run $149 and the 16GB Nano will set you back $199. Also, addition to the new form factor you get a slew of new colors including orange, purple, and red.
Second, the iPod Touch lost a few inches and gained some features. It features a curve bevel like the iPhone, but it thinner. Also, it has a built-in receiver for the Nike + iPod unit. If you add the new onboard speakers and external volume control you get a nice unit. When you knock $100 off the price, you get a great iPod. The 8GB unit will run $229, the 16GB is $299 and the 32GB is $399. The iPod touch is no longer the iPhone minus a phone. It is officially its own unit.
Finally, the firmware coming to iPods and iPhone will feature a new Pandora-ish "genius" feature that will create playlists that reflect the "sound and feel" of your iTunes library. The 2.1 upgrade will reportedly fix some of my iPhone nightmares as well.
Toss in an version 8.0 of the iTunes software, mixit all together, and iPods had a great day. Oh yeah, and Steve Jobs is not dead.

Sony has come out with some very interesting stereo headphones that are completely wireless with the DR-BT160AS "Active" stereo headphones.
Of course, wireless headphones are nothing new, but the unique aspect of the DR-BT160AS is a large pod on either side to house the batteries along with the Bluetooth receiver. Not only that, the DR-BT160AS is splash-proof.
It allows the user to accommodate an MP3 player or cellular phone, and there is a built in microphone for taking phone calls. As you might be able to tell by this picture, the controls fit right on the side.
We don't have a price as yet, but the DR-BT160AS should be available sometime on the Sony website sometime in October.

Until recently, I have owned a Garmin eTrex Venture - it died. I have loved having a GPS forever. I use it for geocaching, finding my car in a crowded parking lot, and for hiking. I didn't want to pay a few hundred dollar
