Convergence Is Back (Now it's my TV)

After many months away, some new topics need to be discussed. It's been ages, but the digital world is continuing to invade my space and everyone else's. This time, it's our TV sets. First it was Tivo, ReplayTV and the like, and now it looks like good old Microsoft is making a major play for my one bit of non-computer time. And.... Now they've done it in a way that truly intrigues me...

Geeky Chic: Making Geeks, Chic (My Introduction)

Remember when plastic pocket protectors, plaid pants, white socks, and Buddy Holly glasses were the stylistic trademarks of the geeky set? Holy crap, times have changed! Today hi-tech gadgetry has as much sex-appeal as it does nerd-appeal, and since those nerds are still the ones who know the most about all the new cool tools, the geek has been elevated to a whole new level of style and respect.

The Truth about Power over Ethernet (PoE) - Implementation Standards vs Home Grown

Which Is Better - One or Two??? (Digital device convergence)

Digital convergence has to be one of the hottest buzz phrases in the geek dictionary for the past several years. People talk about the merging of computers, cellular phones, TVs and even refrigerators. Numerous products have come out that attempt one or more of these combinations, and all have been received with a mixed response. Is the answer to have everything in one place? Or are we all chasing the wrong idea?...

Securing your home or small business network - wireless, broadband

I have had many friends ask me "I just installed DSL at my home and was wondering what I needed to do to protect myself from hackers?"  This is probably one of the most frequently asked questions around security, but surprisingly enough, still more than 80 percent of all home network installations have zero security implemented on their DSL/Cable installations or their wireless networks. Here are are a few tips for securing your home computer against attacks from hackers and spyware.....  read moreNote: Since the writing of this article I have spent time researching other Spyware and Adware tools. I have found what I believe to be one of the most complete anti spy/ad ware package available. Click 'read more' below to see my comments.

Encryption: How Rude! - Taking advantage of wireless insecurity

We live in a society where polite civil behavior is on the decline. Last week I was mortified to discover that my neighbor had enabled encryption on his wireless LAN access point."How rude!", I muttered to myself. I'm not sure exactly which neighbor it is, so I'm not sure who I should be mad at, but that is beside the point. For at least the past two or three years I could turn on my laptop, refresh my IP address to match his subnet, and enjoy the freedom and speed of his broadband internet connection.. But now it's gone... I feel hurt, rejected, locked out. Like a dog left out in the rain to freeze and die (sorry, that may be extreme).Thinking back, was there anything I did to prompt this un-civil action? I never touched any of his machines. Well I'll admit that....

Living with a geek - The detailed plan....

Every day is a new scenario with the same plot. "This is the reason we have to spend more on new technology honey." I bet a few non-geeks out there can relate to this story that share their lives, space and earnings with a geeky significant other.A detailed plan, carefully plotted out on the way home in rush hour traffic is executed as my 'geek' walks through the door after a long, hard day at the office...

Environmental monitoring of your computer room - on a budget

If you are like me, a 'super geek', then you have a network at home with multiple servers. My computer room currently houses three large Linux servers, one Windows server and a plethora of other networking equipment. With over 8000BTU of heat being generated by this equipment, my biggest concern is an outage due to over-heating. In addition, I have a phobia of servers being halted un-gracefully (i.e. power outage).I will share with you my techniques for monitoring power, heat and un-authorized access into your small computer room.....

Zen and the Art of Lightning Protection

Dont let the Surge Bogeyman eat your PC or electronic equipment! Folks love to sell you some Very Fine $$$urge Arre$tor$ to protect your equipment. But the amount of protection you get has little to do with the amount of money you spend on the surge protector. The surge protection specs are fine, but they are taken in laboratory conditions on a standard test bench configuration. The real secret to surge protection is installing your wiring and equipment so it looks just like that laboratory bench ! ! !

Has Technology Become A Bad Thing???

As a fellow geek, I never quite imagined I would say this, but have we finally reached the point where we have so many techno-toys that technology is a bad thing?Just a week ago I might have said no, but that changed recently.  Nowadays, people have electronic toys for running just about every major element of their lives: PDAs, PDA cell phones, Blackberries, etc.  These devices have made it possible for people to stay connected to the world everywhere they go.  This used to have a tremendous "gee-whiz" factor, but now it is an accepted and commonplace use of technology..............

Sleeping with geeks

It all started with an e-mail, if only I knew what was in store for me then!  As I was venturing out into new territory called Matchmaker.com, I found my fate-being married to a geek......

Why do we settle for worthless documentation?

When was the last time you read documentation for a business- or techie-oriented computer product that was not cumbersome and awkward to use at best (if not totally useless)? Thought so. When was the last time you were able to get a complex piece of software up and running using just what was in the box, without having to contact the vendor's support staff for help, wander technical messageboards looking for answers, or do a lot of tedious trial-and-error that the manual didn't remotely prepare you for?  Same here.  For some reason, documentation for technical products that perform complex functions tends to be even less polished and thorough than documentation for simpler consumer products, to the point that many technical folks never even bother to crack the manuals of anything they buy.       Why is that? ........

Home Stereo Gadgets and the Geek Culture

Rushing home after a long day at work, I am looking forward to escaping into my dungeon (basement) to troubleshoot my latest network problem all the while hoping that there is a package waiting for me on my front porch; my new infrared wireless remote control extender.  Who am I ?  Yes, I am a geek.Accomplishing the stage of self-realization is in itself a massivly important step, however I am still struggling with the infinately complex task of interfacing with the non-geek culture. I am married to a beautiful, talented woman; a non-geek, who has the unfortunate task of taming my compulsive behavior when it comes to gadgets, computers and just about anything that I find technically challenging. Am I sick? If so, then it is logical to assume that all geeks are sick. With this said, it is only appropriate that a support group for geeks is formed to help us understand ourselves. This is the reasoning behind the site www.aboutgeeks.com. The tag line for this site should be "for the obssesive-compulsive, socially inept, member of the underground society called Geeks" instead of "A Technology Meeting Place", but I did not have the space available on a typical 800x600 pixel, site description bar on the browser. I feel I must vent to my fellow members of the geekdom society, as I am sure that many of you are experiencing similar challenges.  Now on to my comments on home stereo gadgets....................

Fun with Phishing - how hackers get your information

"What is Phishing? Phishing attacks use 'spoofed' e-mails and fraudulent websites designed to fool recipients into divulging personal financial data such as credit card numbers, account usernames and passwords, social security numbers, etc. By hijacking the trusted brands of well-known banks, online retailers and credit card companies, phishers are able to convince up to 5% of recipients to respond to them." (http://www.antiphishing.org/)How many times have you received an email purportedly from eBay, Paypal, or your bank, where they report there has been a security breach and you need to change your password now or they need to verify your billing information. I've been getting at least two or three of these each day, and I often enjoy doing the analysis to see where these are coming from and how clever and/or stupid the perpetrators of these scams are.I have created four categories of phishing exploits. They are:
