TAMPA, Fla. — For about five years in the 1990s, the cigar industry luxuriated in a wild sales boom when celebrities and trendy 20-somethings decided that puffing imported, hand-rolled stogies was The Next Big Thing.The bubble burst when the supply of quality tobacco couldn’t keep up with demand. The market became flooded with inferior but pricey cigars hastily rolled with lower-grade tobacco, as many of the poseurs and neophytes moved on to something else.
While retailers nationally report sales and interest in cigars are on the rebound, Columbia-area sellers say the smoke never cleared here.Sales have remained steady at The Gourmet Shop in Five Points, said staffer Jason Glenn. The business, which has a walk-in humidor, is among the few premium-cigar retailers in Columbia.
Between $50,000 and $250,000 in awards for projects under The Greater Columbia Fuel Cell Challenge are expected to be announced next week during EngenuitySC ’06. The annual meeting of EngenuitySC, the strategic leadership group dedicated to building a knowledge-based economy in the Midlands, will be at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center on Oct. 17.The fuel cell challenge plans to make one or two awards each for education projects, portable fuel cell applications, stationary applications and transportation, said Russ Keller, senior director of alternative energy programs for the S.C. Research Authority. They will be the challenge’s first awards.
Martek Biosciences said Monday it will be the exclusive U.S. supplier of an algae-derived nutritional supplement for a soy drink WhiteWave Foods Co. plans to introduce next year.The supplement, life’sDHA, is an omega-3 fatty acid that Martek says supports brain, eye and heart health. It is made at Martek’s 260-employee fermentation plant in Kingstree.
