Computer Outlook
Back in July I was interviewed for the Computer Outlook radio show, the host John Iasiuolo was great. He is a supporter of both user groups and software developers. If you have a new release get in touch with him about the possibility of an interview. http://www.computeroutlook.com

Search Phrases
OneStat reported that most people use 2 word phrases in search engines. Of all the search phrases world wide, 28.91 percent of the people use 2 word phrases, 27.85 percent use 3 word phrases and 17.11 percent use 4 word phrases. Less and less people now use a single keyword for search. http://www.onestat.com/html/aboutus_pressbox45-search-phrases.html

New Tools - Tech Preview
Permutator
Permutator creates permutations (good word ;-)) of keywords and keyword phrases. It acts as a keyword 'tumbler' to give users all possible combinations of keyword phrases. I found the tumbler not only helpful with capturing the long tail, but helpful for locating keyword rich domains. http://www.boxersoftware.com/thepermutator.htm

Studio v Greenbox Logo Maker
Wow! All I can say about this software is it is very cool. I am what many would consider graphically 'challenged', the Studio v Greenbox Logo Maker provides design elements along with a variety of effects that can be applied. You can literally create a professional looking logo in just a few minutes. I really am impressed by this software, and the best part it is only $ 29.95!

Giving
Every year we donate 100% of all sales that occur on Sept 11, to a charity, and while you might not want to do something that radical consider this a time of year to reflect and give to those who might be in need.
With Sept 11, around the corner there is no better time to do this:

Harold Holmes of Lincoln Beach Software is riding in the Gateway MS150 this month and is currently offering a free software product for any direct donations of $20 or more. The MS150 is a 150 mile bike ride that raises awareness of Multiple Sclerosis and raise money to fight this debilitating disease. If you would like to help this cause please go to http://www.lincolnbeach.com/ms150.php for more information. To take advantage of this offer you must donate between now and September 15th.

This cause is near and dear to me, as my son and I are doing a 3-day 50 mile walk for MS Sept 8-10, 2006 and are still in need of donations. If you love SMR and wish to donate http://tinyurl.com/zga5q we sure would welcome the help!

New Concept
AdLandmark - pay per download on smaller download sites (minimum .10 per download). I really have not had the chance to evaluate this, they did tell me they can detect completed downloads, though I'm not sure how, as you still host the file. Hopefully in the near future I will dig into this more and determine whether it might be something worth doing.

Deals - Icon Bargain
Icons-icons.com is extending their August sale just for SMR readers. They are offering all their icons sets for only $29.95 each, and the matching backgrounds for $9.95. You can get the special extended sale prices, through September 8, at this private icons-icons webpage: http://www.icons-icons.com/SMR-special.php

Article(s)
Credibility Online
Credibility online is becoming more and more of an issue. Anyone can have a blog or post to a forum and anyone can edit wiki entries. Web surfers are beginning to comprehend that just because it is in print does not necessarily mean that it is true.
http://www.feedforall.com/questioning-credibility-online.htm

Compelling Articles Make Great Copy
Articles are excellent tools to generate web traffic and product interest. Writing articles may sound easy enough, but it is important that you write the proper types of articles to attract interested readers. Follow these simple steps to create compelling and interesting content. http://www.small-business-software.net/articles-for-content.htm

Convert RSS2HTML
Many webmasters have realized the benefit of using RSS to dynamically update websites. This means that the website content automatically changes when the RSS feed is updated. This allows for webmasters to serve dynamic content or a mixture of static and dynamic content on their website. http://www.feedforall.com/converting-rss-to-html.htm

RSS Feed Tips to Help Search Engine Optimization
RSS feeds are a great communication medium, and when properly managed, web feeds can bring in significant Internet traffic. RSS feeds should contain compelling themed content with episodic titles that are united in common broad theme. Use RSS feeds as an online marketing and search engine optimization tool. Just as optimizing an HTML web page will increase exposure, so too will an RSS feed that is properly optimized and promoted will also increase your exposure. Use these simple tips to improve your web feed exposure. http://www.feedforall.com/feed-tips-seo.htm

Search - Google
Google appears to be getting into the shareware business, well freeware anyway. Now you can offer private-labeled email, IM and calendar tools to all of your users for free. The web tools are all hosted by Google, and I am unsure whether that is good or bad. Chalk up more aggregate data to their already growing repository. https://www.google.com/a/

Trademark Violation
I posted this in the SMR blog http://www.softwaremarketingresource.com/blog.html but I found it so innovative I felt it worth reposting:

Ok so this women purchased a bunch of googlesomething.com domains and attempted to sell them to Google for a large sum of cash, thinking she would make millions. When the Google trademark lawyers came calling you would think, like many of those before her she would back down and turn tail. She did counteroffer the domains at a discounted rate, these offers could have been her demise, because when she actually went to court her actual defense was ingenious.
The domain poacher told the court she had been planning a dating site and the domain was intended as "Go Ogle" rather than "Google". Because she had offered to sell the domains the court ruled in Google's favor. Still, her ingenuity was rather impressive!

SIC Recap - Overview of Recent Software Conference

An HTML version can be viewed at http://www.softwaremarketingresource.com/author-resource-newsletter69.html .

This issue of SMR is a little different than the normal. The following is a recap of the recent Shareware Industry Conference held in Denver. It is my belief that SIC is the best and oldest conference around for independent software developers. Each year it is better and better. Read the review and consider attending the 2007 SIC.

SMR Sponsor
Avanage provides all the tools and expertise you need to start accepting payments online and to increase your internet software sales. Sign up with Avangate today! 4.9% + 2.5 USD commission!

When will I learn! I never manage to book flights at a reasonable hour! We arrived in Denver at 2:30 AM (Denver time, my internal clock was set on Boston time and thought it was 4:30 AM!). Needless to say, we did not run into the usual cluster of SIC attendees in the lobby.

SIC OVERVIEW - WEDNESDAY
After a few hours of sleep, I made my way downstairs to the registration area to begin preparing for the flood of attendees. The usual crew was kind enough to assist the board in preparing name badges and goodie bags.

Registration opened at 3:00. The initial buzz amongst attendees was about the AISIP http://www.aisip.com . The AISIP is an independent software organization started a little over a year ago by Sue Pichotta. Just prior to the conference Sue sold the AISIP to Michael and David Halls. While most developers adore Sue, they are very interested in seeing what kinds of things the Halls will do with the AISIP.

I have interviews planned with both Sue and Michael, that will be posted shortly. The interviews will hopefully provide additional insight into the future plans for the AISIP.

Wednesday evening the welcome reception was hosted by Protexis http://www.protexis.com . The reception was on the 12th floor and provided sweeping views of the mountains and landscape. As the event was sponsored by Protexis, I felt it prudent to get a better idea of what services Protexis provides. Glen Haley, was a bit of a tease, as he explained that Protexis has ecommerce and software delivery services but also indicated they would be making some big announcements in the future. I tried to pry but didn't get very far, so look for future announcements from Protexis!

One of the best things about the conference is that you have the opportunity to put a face to the online personalities from the software newsgroups. Often the appearances of individuals contrast their online persona. Others are exactly what you expect. And each and every year I really enjoy catching up with people like the Thorntons http://www.thornsoft.com and Joost from HC TopSystems http://www.topsystems.com .

Of course there are also post-conference regrets. While I saw Loren and Kim Brewer from Wingeniuty http://www.wingenuity.com I did not really have the opportunity to catch up with them.

SIC OVERVIEW - THURSDAY
Throughout the course of the conference I thoroughly enjoyed seeing developers who I've come to know online. Seeing the eSellerate crew, Mike Burda and Patrick Smith hang up their tye-dye for the Digital River brand caused a chuckle or two.
I chatted with Dave Hamel about his new project Permutator that "captures the long tail" which is a mini-obsession I have. He provided a copy of his Permutator program and I'll be reviewing it in the September issue of SMR. I also really enjoyed seeing Darcy and Art Araya from SaltyBrine Software http://www.saltybrine.com they are just such a fun couple. In fact Darcy put together a great movie of the Shareware Industry Awards Banquet for those who missed the event (see the link below).

The session that I enjoyed participating in the most would have to be the website critique session with Dave Collins of Shareware Promotions http://www.sharewarepromotions.com and Ben Weintraub of Merit Software http://www.meritsoftware.com and myself. We collected business cards from "victims" in the audience, who wanted to have their websites critiqued. We drew the cards out of a bowl, and the selected websites were critically reviewed by the panelists.
Dave took on the role of Simon Cowell. Dave nailed the accent and wasted no time in declaring which websites were utterly rubbish. The comments made were taken in the spirit they were intended, and I hope to see attendees who have improved their ranking and doubled their sales as a result of the criticism.

Because of the sessions incredible popularity I thought that I would mention that Dave Collins has an in-depth website review service available. The service is far more extensive than the quick reviews we performed. Details can be found at: http://www.sharewarepromotions.com/website_review.html . The impact of a poor design on sales can be significant, a critique can often result in both higher conversions and increased web traffic.

I had a great chat with Nick Bradbury creator of FeedDemon (HomeSite and Topstyle) http://www.bradsoft.com . Nick is always fun to chat with. Though he is is less of a control freak than I am, we both share a common paranoia (some would call it a concern) about Attention Data http://www.attentiontrust.org. It was a great discussion and I'm looking forward to hearing more from Nick about his activities as they relate to Attention Data.

Once again, Digital River http://www.digitalriver.com was gracious enough to host Thursday evening's reception. I have to say for a large company Digital River has a great sense of humor! This year's Thursday evening event was a blast! Digital River's theme was "Rev Up Sales" the reception was centered on a race car theme. They had a professional photographer and attendees could don a racing suit and be photographed. Additionally they had arcade style driving/racing games and remote controlled race cars.

However, all of that paled in comparison to the main event. Digital River had motorized toilets! Racers would don a racing jumpsuit mount their toilet bowl, and race the opposing team in 4 laps around the race track. Racers would then quickly change out of their racing suit with the assistance of the pit crew. The next racer would suit up and ride their portable mobile potty another four laps.

Each team was comprised of four racers and each racer was required to complete four laps in their special Digital River racing jumpsuit. The team who completed the race laps and removed the racing suit first, was the determined winner. A good pit crew was critical to success. It was a really humorous event. Some software developers found the toilet bowls quite difficult to manage and crashed their tanks. The event really gave new meaning to porta-potties. ;-)

Other respected developers took their races quite seriously and the looks of concentration on their faces are evident in the photo collages that are popping up on the web. Great event DR!

SIC OVERVIEW - FRIDAY
Mike Dulin from Shareware Radio http://www.sharewareradio.com interviewed me about the conference and our applications. I have to say he was really great. He immediately put me at ease with initial chit chat and did a great job directing the conversation.

The ASP attended the conference in force and it sounds like the ASP leadership has lots of ideas about PAD security. I hear that there will be news about this shortly.

Friday morning gave way to bleary eyed attendees eager for more. I participated in another session with Dave Collins. Dave had this fancy powerpoint presentation that was really quite impressive.

I love that people like Edwin Siebsma attend and companies like WinZip frequent the Shareware Industry Conferency. WinZip is probably one of the best known and most traditional shareware applications and they support the conference each and every year. Even as the conference grows into something much more than what was once though of as traditional shareware, the roots are not forgotten.

Throughout the conference hospitality suites were open, allowing attendees to interact on a personal level with vendors. The hosted hospitality suites included:

TUCOWS - http://www.tucows.com - Tucows is hosting a very fun contest and were demoing Vlog-It, a very cool program for recording and editing video. The contest runs through August 10th, and there will be 30 winners announced!
CNET- http://www.download.com - Cnet has a new tracking program that is available in their Premium Reporting Center. CNET trax allows tracking of page views, initiated downloads, completed downloads and buy now button clicks.
Digital River - http://www.digitalriver.com - Digital River took a different approach to their hospitality suite, they were "educating" developers with different educational stations. I heard great things from developers with regards to the information they received from the various experts and stations.
Avanquest - http://www.avanquest.com - The suite was used for one on one meetings with attendees interested in expanding their European distribution opportunities.
Plimus - http://www.plimus.com - Plimus hosted a suite, though I did not really have the opportunity to connect with them.
Massages by Dr File Finder - http://www.drff.com - Mike Callahan's daughter Kadee and a college friend provided massages free of charge to travel weary attendees, the rooms atmosphere and candlelight soothed souls and was also well received.

Friday night was exhibit night where vendors show off their products and services to attendees. Massive food displays, various cook to order pasta dishes, a carving station with a huge leg of beef and heaps of finger food greeted attendees.
Attendees collected stamps on their "Colorado map" from each of the exhibit booths. A completed map meant you would be entered into a drawing for 3 Creative Labs Media Player's, donated courtesy of Microsoft http://www.microsoft.com .

SIC OVERVIEW - SATURDAY
The late nights and early mornings were beginning to show on the faces of some attendees by Saturday morning. Saturday's session continued, it was clear that Dave Collins from Shareware Promotions http://www.sharewarepromotions.com was a hit with attendees. Dave sessions were crowded and attendees really enjoyed his sessions.

I did an impromptu session with Ronny Karl from SurfWare Labs http://www.surfwarelabs.com and I have to say he was a great speaker. I learned about the conversation rainbow and really appreciated the personal stories that he added to the presentation. Ronny and I gave homework to attendees, they were asked to meet 5 people they did not know prior to the conference and make an effort to help 2 of them. The session was really all about stepping outside of your comfort zone. Even those that have attended multiple conference took advantage of the educational sessions with Rich Holler honing his networking skills. ;-)

Three sessions in particular that caused some buzz amongst attendees was Dave Sampson from MixMeister http://www.mixmeister.com , Alastair Rampell from Rampell Software http://www.rampellsoftware.com and of course Michael Lehman from Microsoft. Dave Sampson discussed a whole host of information related to improving and maximizing the customer relationship. While I was unable to attend the session, I read the presentation paper and he provided concrete actionable items for developers interested in increasing sales.

The other session that created a "stir" among attendees was Alastair Rampell's. Alastair is quite an impressive guy, with some really great ideas. Alastair discussed effective ways to make money from people who do not typically buy. Alastair (Alex) really stepped outside the box with some really new ideas. Alex has been testing alternate distribution methods for quite some time, he brought his personal experience to a session discussing some really interesting ideas with attendees. The concept is fascinating and will help developers generate a secondary revenue stream, which according to Alex in some cases can be larger than the primary revenue stream. I hope to be writing more about this in future issues of SMR, for now a review of the concept that Alastair is launching can be found at http://www.icons-icons.com/trial-pay.php .

Microsoft took center stage at SIC to launch a new development tool for developers. The tool called Project Glidepath has a number of interesting facets. Michael recorded the session and interested developers are encouraged to listen to the presentation.

The Banquet
Entertainment was provided by Gayle Becwar who was a comic magician, he was very talented and funny. The performance was very interactive, and a number of attendees had the opportunity to participate. I still cannot decipher the "magic" behind his tricks.

Rob Rosenberger was back in the role of MC and it was great to have him back. The awards themselves show how shareware as a marketing model has expanded. A number of large companies have adopted the practice of using trial versions to sell and promote their applications. Steve Lee once said that all software would be sold this way, and that is in fact what was reflected with this year's People's Choice and Software Industry Awards with a large number of big companies receiving recognition including Google, Microsoft and Adobe all taking home awards.

Next year's Shareware Industry Conference will be held in Denver, Colorado and I hope to see everyone there!

Top 10 Things I Learned at SIC
1. Developers are looking at other ways to make money.
2. Web real estate on the post sales page has potential
3. Users will spend money, just maybe not on your software
4. The Long Tail is allusive for developers
5. Don't forget the basics of SEO, influence what you can control that means website titles and descriptions on every page!
6. Social bookmarking is still young
7. Desktop software and software as a service (SaaS) are melding
8. Developers have just begun to scrape the surface of Internet marketing there is so much more that we can do, all of the good ideas have not been used up!
9. Communication is critical to success.
10. AdWords is a science not an advertising model ;-)

Digital River Acquisition Editorial
Digital River has recently completed the acquisition of eSellerate. What made this sale a little different than the others, Steve Kiene the owner of eSellerate went on record in 2004 emphatically saying he would never sell to Digital. As I have done in the past, I requested that Digital River answer some basic questions regarding the acquisition.

I spoke with and sent Brant Pallazza from the shareware division of Digital River, a list of questions regarding the acquisition. Unfortunately, though I was told it would take 24 hours to get the responses, it has been over two weeks and I have not received any further responses to my email inquiries.

What this says about Digital River?
Digital River is a reactionary company. DR expected there to be fallout from the acquisition of eSellerate, and really the response from software developers was quite mild. Most developers have become accustom to DR's business model and are no longer surprised when competitors are acquired.

What this does not mean?
The lack of response from developers to the acquisition does NOT mean they are not interested in the details, or the questions that were asked. I found this acquisition of particular interest, not only because of the rumors that eSellerate employees benefited from the sale, but also because eSellerate was able to build a successful affiliate program that Digital River has been struggling with. I was particularly interested in how the acquisition and technology would be integrated to benefit existing platforms.

The Software Marketing Newsletter is extremely well read in the online software community. The "interview" gave Digital River a platform and opportunity to communicate with their target audience. Sadly they have not taken advantage of the opportunity.

Digital River has never been great with communication, I thought that they had learned from the past acquisitions and were prepared to be proactive rather than reactive. The details of the acquisitions DO matter to software developers, they need to know how it will affect their businesses. They need to know what will and what will not change.

While some might assume that DR will leave eSellerate untouched only integrating back-end functionality as they have done with other acquisitions, other developers need reassurances. Perhaps DR's lack of response infers that this acquisition really is different from others, I really don't know. Web Based Applications and Writely
Because of a scheduled vacation I had planned to work this weekend. When I logged into Writely (Google's online word processor) I received a message that it was closed for scheduled maintenance.

1. I did not receive any notice or forewarning that indicated it would be down. If it was scheduled why were there customers/users not given notice?
2. I rely on these documents being accessible at all times to my staff for collaboration, many of whom work on weekends because of flex schedules.

This has reinforced my belief that desktop applications will always have a home in my business.

Everything You Need to Know About Linking
Websites that are able to amass a large number of links from related websites that contain relevant content, tend to have an advantage when attempting to rank well in the large search engines. Conference(s)
Shareware Industry Conference (SIC) 2006
SIC - What to Expect
Each year I always receive a handful of questions related to the Shareware Industry Conference, so I thought I'd take a moment to let first timer's know what to expect and how to prepare. If you have been to SIC before, try stepping out of your comfort zone. Meet and chat with people that you don't already know.

1. Packing - Plan on bringing an extra bad for goodies. SIC sponsors are very generous and it is a shame to leave things behind because your luggage doesn't have room.

2. Dress Code - The conference itself is very casual and most people wear slacks or jeans with t-shirts, polos, or dress shirts. Many people wear shirts with company logos to promote their brand. While the conference and sessions are casual, the SIAF banquet is anything but, with most everyone wearing suits, gowns, dress' or even tuxedos. Additionally, I would recommend bringing a sweater or light jacket as in the past the conference rooms have been on the cool side.

3. Meals - Most meals are sponsored or made freely available to registered conference attendees (meaning attendees that have paid to attend the conference and sessions). Throughout the day, beverages are available. The sponsors with hospitality suites usually have an assortment of goodies and refreshments available.

4. Sessions - Throughout the day sessions are held. There are 2 sessions running at any given time and attendees can optionally choose which sessions they would like to attend. The SIAF makes an effort to make presentations available for all attendees. The speakers sit at the front of the room, facing the attendees. Each session has 1-3 panelists. The last 15 minutes of the session is typically reserved for questions. CDs will be provided to attendees that will include all presentations.

5. Wireless Access - The hotel has wireless access, and in the past the SIAF has made a cybercafe available for attendees to use. If it is crowded attendees, are asked to use the systems for no more than 15 minutes in a single sitting.

6. Freebie Table - A "freebie" table is made available for attendees. Attendees can provide product literature, CDs or promotional items. Attendees are free to browse the table throughout the conference. Space on the table is somewhat limited and attendees are asked to be courteous to other people's items. If exposure is critical consider sponsoring. All sponsors are given the opportunity to include an item in the goodie bag that is given to each attendee.

7. Networking - Without a doubt the biggest benefit of the SIC are the networking opportunities. No need to be shy everyone is welcome. Bring business cards and take the opportunity to talk to anyone and everyone. I find it helpful to write notes on the back of the business cards that I collect to remind me what was discussed.

Fascinating Post on Axandra about Google
There's a lot of speculation about the information that Google has about domain names. Last year, Google became a domain name registrar but they haven't offered domain registration services. So why would Google decide to become a registrar? Why did Google become a domain registrar?

It seems that Google doesn't intend to buy or sell domain names. It is much more likely that Google wanted to have greater access to domain information for its search algorithms. As a registrar, Google has access to the APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) of other registrars. While Google doesn't have access to the customer records of VeriSign or other registrars, they can now easily query WHOIS records, and use it as part of their ranking algo.

If you do not read Axandra's free weekly newsletter consider adding it to your list! http://www.axandra.com

PubCon Overview - The Tipping Point
I recently attended the PubCon conference in Boston. Malcolm Gladwell the author of The Tipping Point and Blink was the keynote speaker. He was very engaging and raised some very interesting points.

The book, The Tipping Point, in part discusses the concept of connectors and mavens, and how they bring about change. Connectors are those unique individuals who have an uncanny connection to an unbelievable number of other people. They typically cultivate relationships and grow extensive networks in a variety of different social circles. Connectors have extremely diverse social networks, while most individual have three to five social networks; connectors have an astounding fifteen social networks. Mavens are those individuals who consistently provide highly specific and relevant information based on analysis of a specific sector, they might evangelize a specific brand or be known for being price conscious.

What is The Long Tail?
At the PubCon Conference that I recently attended there was a whole lot of talk about The Long Tail. I thought it might be helpful to those unfamiliar with the concept to explain what the Long Tail really is.

The phrase "The Long Tail" was first used in 2004 by Chris Anderson a writer for Wired Magazine. Anderson used the phrase to describe business models. The article initially referencing The Long Tail referred to the fact that a small handful of blogs have a large number of links pointing to them, while millions of smaller blogs have only a handful of links. Chris Anderson described the effects of the long tail on business models and argued that products that are in a low demand can effectively and collectively make up a market share that exceeds the few of those that are in high demand.

Advice For Developers
I had an intern this past week, and I asked him what advice he would give to developers. He felt that many developers overlook simplicity in favor of features, and that ultimately simple=success.

According to my intern:
From newcomers to the computer world, to the technological savvy, simplicity is the key to a popular, great, and selling program. Something that isn’t tedious, something that isn’t bland, and something that isn’t complex; something that is simple. Sure, great and smoother code is nice, but so is a better interface and simplicity. Programs that have a lot of options can overwhelm the neophytes to the program (although it may be very pleasing to the very few technical elite). Programs like BitTorrent, iTunes, and Mozilla Firefox all have two things in common: they have the user in mind and simplicity. Things such as a simple interface, a small learning curve, easy access to tools and options, enhanced search capabilities, and all-in-one packages make things for the end-user much simpler and friendly. Take for instance, Mozilla Firefox. The interface is fairly simple for the first time downloads/users and customizable later on for each individual needs, tabbed browsing makes it easier to surf through different web pages rather than having different windows, it works just like any other Internet browser, tools such as the built in Google search bar, download manager, and options menu are very easy to access, as said before, Google search bar and many other search add-ons as well, and all the privacy, security, pop-up blockers are there when you download for the first time. Mozilla even says it themselves on their site: "Our next generation browser will simplify and speed up your browsing experience." So whether you want a smoother code, better graphics, or faster load times, simplicity is the key for you and the user.

Software Marketing News - Software Award News, Google AdSense Advice, Increase Productivity and More

Hi,
Welcome to the March issue of Software Marketing News, an independent voice for software developers. An HTML version can be viewed at http://www.softwaremarketingresource.com/author-resource-newsletter64.html .

My name is Dave Collins from SharewarePromotions, and this month I’m honoured to be writing the content for Software Marketing News. I’m not quite Sharon, but hope to be able to share some good information with you anyway.

So without further ado:

Technology for Productivity
Last month, Sharon mentioned how useful she found TypePilot to be. So far I’ve only had time to take a quick look, but I also thought it seemed very impressive.

The fact is that most of people reading this don’t have enough time to do everything we’d like to each day, so anything that can save time is bound to be interesting.

One of our clients has a great application by the name of Macro Scheduler. You can use it to automate tasks, enter repetitive key clicks, run macros, automate data transfer, script web applications and more.

Personally, I use it to format entries to our blog, to copy backups across the network at night, to compress downloaded log files, to switch my system speakers off at night and for countless other tasks each day.

Every minute counts, and I’d hazard a guess that Macro Scheduler saves me in the region of 45 minutes a day. Literally.

Well worth a look: http://www.mjtnet.com/

Reaping the benefits of AdWords
Those of you who have met me at the various shareware conferences over the last few years have undoubtedly heard me extolling the benefits of Google AdWords.

I assume that most people reading this newsletter are already using AdWords. If not, then you’re probably missing out on a fair amount of low-cost, targeted traffic, aka sales. Enough said.

One of the more shocking conclusions that I’ve come to over the past few years is that the average AdWords account is set up quite badly. I’m not just talking about losing opportunities, although that would be bad enough. Many of the accounts that I have seen are wasting money. Some of them quite large amounts, on a daily basis.

Let’s take a step back.

There are four main parties involved here. Google, the AdSense account holder, the people carrying out the search and the advertiser.

Google wants two things. To provide relevant results for the searches, and to make money from the advertiser.

The AdSense account holder wants one thing. Money for the adverts displayed on their site/s.

The people carrying out the search want one thing. The information they’re searching for.

The advertiser wants two things. Good exposure, and a healthy return on their investment.

Of all the parties, Google is in the most sensitive position. They need to make sure that all the other parties are happy with the arrangement. But never forget that their reason for existence isn’t to provide a service and make the world a better place. It’s to make money.

The fact is that the Google AdWords system, by default, is heavily biased towards Google themselves. And there’s nothing wrong with that, because it’s their system. But this bias does come at the expense of the advertisers.

In a sense, there’s a natural order and balance to the system. Even if you set it up quite badly, you should see reasonable results. But at the end of the day, it’s Google who benefits the most.

There’s good news and bad news.

The bad news is that you shouldn’t be happy with just reasonable. You are more or less handing over money directly from your haemorrhaging account. Even if there’s still enough blood left to keep you alive.

The good news is that there’s a great deal you can do to turn around your AdWords ROI. Whether you’re starting from poor or reasonable, it’s quite possible to turn this into excellent.

If pushed I could probably churn out hundreds of tips and hints, but time and space are limited. So here are my five top tips regarding the most commonly made AdWords mistakes:

(1) Tracking each ad individually is essential. Google’s account will only let you see how many clicks you get for each ad. But without tracking, you might never know that 99.9% of the visitors that you’re paying for take one look at your website page for one second before leaving. Not good.

(2) Clicks from the content network are not worth as much as clicks from Google search and the Search Network. If you’re paying as much (or more) for your content ads then you are almost certainly losing money.

(3) Separation of content network and search network ads is essential. Separate campaigns means separate pricing, budgets, ads, keywords and tracking. Don’t put them together.

(4) If you don’t know what “broad matching” means, then you are definitely throwing money away. Find out immediately at the Google Help Centre - http://adwords.google.com/support - and tighten up your matching options as soon as you possibly can.

(5) Unless you’re only using exact matching (which is a bad idea in itself), you should look into negative keywords. Failure to do so is another way to reduce the ROI and improve Google’s bank balance unnecessarily.

One more tip for good luck. Never, ever, under any circumstances, let a Google AdWords account run itself. Even once setup correctly, you should be checking in at least every two weeks or so.

The Google Help Centre is a great resource, but if you don’t have the time or inclination, why not have a look to see what we can do for you. Our Google AdWords Management package might be just what you’re looking for.

Covering all bases
Many software companies within the shareware industry are at the leaner end of the company-size scale. Yet for many of us, what we lose in size, manpower, budgets and corporate presence, we more than make up for with responsiveness, willingness to take risk, adaptability and innovation.

However, those of us un/lucky enough to be forward thinking are aware that there are other prices to pay for small size. We have no IT department, communications network, PR team, financial department or boss to “guide” us. We take all of that on our own shoulders.

So I’m sometimes horrified to see how many small business are failing to take even the most basic steps to protect their infrastructure. Despite the fact that doing so could make the difference between sinking or swimming in a crisis.

A few simple and relatively cheap steps could ensure that your business survives.

Backups. Backing up your data is more than a good idea. It’s essential. Critical. Vitally important. And with the low prices of the hardware and software required, no business has any excuse not to do so.

A couple of hundred dollars will buy you a copy of Acronis True Image and an external hard drive. Set the software up to automatically back up all of your critical data either across the network or onto a DVD periodically. Make an image of your hard drive onto the external hard drive, then disconnect it and store it somewhere safe

Imagine that tomorrow you walk into your office to discover that your hard drive is dead, and the data cannot be recovered. Work out how many emails, documents, downloads and MB of source data you would lose, and how long it would take you to get back. $200 is all you need to prevent this scenario from occurring.

Connectivity. Over the years I’ve used a dial-up connection, ISDN, ADSL and 2-way satellite to connect to the internet. The only thing that they have in common is that they all stop working at some point. Without exception.

If your business relies on your connection to the web, then having a backup connection is critical. In the past we relied on ADSL plus a dialup account to fall back on if we needed it. It saved us more than once.

Nowadays, we have a second, completely separate phone line, with a separate ADSL account using a different provider. It’s a form of insurance, but we still use the second connection, so get some value for money out of it as well.

If or when disaster strikes or problems arise, having something to fall back on is critical. Don’t let the next mishap or bad day jeopardise your company. All of your marketing efforts can go out of the window in literally hours. Cover all bases.

Pay Per Performance – directions & lessons
We’ve been working with different flavours of Pay Per Click longer than I can remember. I was one of the early adopters of Goto, and have worked quite extensively with FindWhat, AdWords and others.

Aside from the obvious benefits of using these systems, it’s also been interesting watching them develop over the years.

GoTo were the real pioneers of the PPC concept, but aside from implementing a great idea, the most significant thing they seem to have done is change their name; to Overture and then to Yahoo! Search Marketing.

As for the rest, if truth be told, it’s even difficult to remember them. Miva, Kanoodle, Enhance, Espotting; the reason these names are only vaguely familiar is that there are really only two serious contenders.

And let’s cut to the chase here. Google AdWords is leagues ahead of Overture.

Google is slick. Overture is slow enough to be classed as stagnant.

Google is responsive. Overture does well at dragging their feet.

Google adds new features on an ongoing basis. Overture concentrates on changing their name.

There’s an important lesson here. Being first is very different from staying first. The fact that Overture were the pioneers of modern PPC hasn’t given them any advantage whatsoever in the long run.

Look at it from the other point of view. Google looked at Overture, but saw a good idea that they could make great. And they did so quickly.

However, don’t get me wrong here. Don’t think that I am a huge fan of all things Google related. I do like most of what they do, but some of it is considerably less than impressive.

Nevertheless, at the end of the day Google offer the best opportunities for our clients.

The old style of advertising, such as the CPM model, is now more or less redundant. Online advertising is a buyer’s market, and that puts all the power right into our hands. PPC services have to deliver quality services with a decent ROI. Failure to do so will result in their going the way of the dodo. Or Overture.

Awards Announced!!!
All of you have patiently been awaiting the announcement of the Software Vendor Awards! I'm pleased to say they have been posted. The Software Vendor Awards recognized those vendors (as determined by other industry professionals) who provide exceptional value, customer service or innovation!

A small independent vendor, Plimus swept the e-commerce category, while eSellerate's affiliate program shined. Digital River's FileKicker dominated the file hosting category. Other categories divided the votes between nominees with unexpected ties. Russian backed vendors proved to be a force with SWRUS, winning best software organization. SoftIdentity won in the graphics and icon categories, and ASPack was chosen as the best software protection scheme. Shareware Promotions challenged Rudenko when it came to software submission customer service. As expected Mike Callahan took home a well deserved win as best software reviewer.

All of the winners can be viewed online at: http://www.softwaremarketingresource.com/winners-2006.htm or view the nominees and winners http://www.softwaremarketingresource.com/winners.htm

What can be learned from the nominations?

Perhaps other will find opportunities in the following observations, I made from the nominations:"
- there were not a lot of nominations in any of the "innovation" categories.
- individuals were sometimes recognized in the customer service area rather than the company.
- there is not a lot of competition in some areas.
- customer service and overall value were closely related in many cases

One of my resolutions each year is to improve productivity and improve process. Al Harberg suggested TypePilot to me around the first of the year, so I gave it a try. TypePilot is saving approximately 7 hours a week. I've created a directory of common phrases, explanations, answers and signatures for our various products. I use the macros to respond to forum posts and emails. I expect that as I continue to build my response database, I will save even more time. If productivity matters to you, take a look at TypePilot

Technology Predictions for 2006 and Reflections on 2005
2005 literally took the world by storm. The tragedies of the Asian Tsunami, the Hurricanes that blew through the US Gulf Coast and the earthquakes that swallowed parts of Pakistan have left an indelible mark on 2005. While mother nature cast a shadow on 2005, it was technology that delivered the impact that resulted in a huge outpouring of donations.

Past Predictions

How did Dave Collins do with his predictions?
I'd have to say he nailed it - hmmm security and privacy, RSS, and search engine landscape changes.
http://www.sharewarepromotions.com/blog/200412.html#e578

How did I do with last year's predictions?
DR is still struggling and has not unified their aquisitions and technology into a consolidated - showing that size in this case does not matter. I was off on Outsourcing , conceptually I was right but I'm seeing more from China than India these days. And strategic relationships have never been more important than they are today - not too bad for a non-oracle ;-)
